Humidity

im having trouble keeping the humidity high in my terrarium. it keeps going to the low 40's when it should be in the 70's right? how can i keep the humidity up without spraying it all the time?

im planning on buying a 3-4 month old veiled chameleon.

Humidity should be in the 50's and spike to 70s or so when ur mist. What is the temperature? That could effect it. You could add live plants to keep humidity levels up. The more bark (wood) and fake plants you have, can suck the humidity right out of the air.

First, check the gauge, make sure it is accurate. Humidity isn't too hard to retain.

40-50% is fine resting, when you mist it should bump up to 70% or more and hang that way for a good few hours.

Some humidity tips:

1. Live plants inside the cage retain ALOT of humidity. A few days of misting and they actually retain a lot higher humidity.

2. Live plants outside the cage. Actually helps with ambient humidity but works as a veg well, keeping humidity in.

3. Misting for longer durations.

4. Humidifier with some pipe jimmied onto it. I can provide you links of this.

Are you using a glass enclosure? I don't have experience with glass, but with a screen, I find that misting the screen until small droplets cover the walls helps with my humidity as well.

Where you live regionally would give people a good idea on what would work as well.

my temp is around 80-90 degrees, i live in central california and i have a mesh metal screen cage for it.

I live in Florida and need to have the A/C set at 76 for my Jackson’s Cham. This created a problem with the humidity… I purchased a Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier from Target for under $25.00. The humidifier runs off timers set to go on when the cage lighting goes off at night and during the day around noon for a few hours. I also mist in the morning before leaving to work and in the evening when I return. This has helped keep the humidity in his room around 60 during the day and 70 at night.

thanks for all the input! i figured out how to keep it up for now, then ill prolly buy a humidifier later :)

i live in the phoenix area.. if anyone should have problems arizona is definitley the place to have it, but i keep my humiditiy between 50 and 70 percent all day every day... i have a screen cage, i have a ficus benjamina in there... and i bought some wood bark and layed it through the bottom.. and i bought like three or 4 tropical plants from petco for 2.99.. little ones at the bottom and i have a misting system so it does a splendid job, soak up the bark, it definitley holds humiditiy and the more plants the better.. i come home and the humidity will be like 70 percent... if you want i can take a pic tomorrow so you can take and look and you can try, its cheap.. wood bark is like ten bucks, i spent like 12 for four plants, and just keep it moist inside the cage, my chameleon loves to chill where the humidity is at.. and my temperatures are lower 90's in the cage... and the heat outside is like 105 degrees.. so it should work in cali.. ill post a pic if you want tomorrow

Veilds are not as demanding when it comes to humidity like panthers. you can get away with 40-50% humidity and be fine.

Just up the misting sessions at the signs of a shed to make it easier.

Another cheap/easy fix is to tape some trash bags to a few sides of the cage. For me this is a MUST in Vegas and even with the live plants, trash bags and mistking (8 cycles a day), I still have challenges keeping humidity where I want it to be.

DOn't bother with getting a humidifier later. A veiled won't need it. A lot of good suugestions have been made to keep up the humidty if need be. As someone said 40 to 50% is good for a veiled.

I just checked the tracking number on your veiled. He's on his way. You should have him in a few hours.

ya i remember you guys telling me about the trashbags.. or soak up some towels and put them on the sides.. that works also.. but i found it to be a pain with towels since wet towels weigh a little bit

ok thanks, i kind of figured that i probably wouldn't need a humidifier after all. i was just nervous because other people was telling me to keep the humidity at 70 to 80% all the time, but now i know that it doesnt need to be as high as that constantly. either ways, i could just mist a few times more if it needs it.

If you were keep the humidity at 70-80% all the time, your going to have far more problems then you'd imagine. URI's..etc.

Like I said 40-50% is fine for veileds and panthers find comfort in the 55-65% range.

As long as you are using a fair amount of live plants and misting 3-4 times a day, you should be just fine.

You will find the room holds temperatures better with humid air and or the use of a humidifier, since the heat and cool air has something to hold on to. I tend to use my humidifier more in the winter since it is naturally drier during that season.

Umbrella plants and pothos are your #1 choice for increasing humidity through natural means. Most are not the greatest for climbing, but they provide great filler foliage and hiding spots, along with humidity.

Use paper towels instead of regular towels. They will be much lighter when wet and can still hold water for fairly long amounts of time.

where should I place the humidity gauge?

Right now I have it on the right wall right under the plants.
The misting nozzle is right on the top of the plants on the same side.

I always mount mine dead center in the cage to get an overall reading. I zip tie the sensor to a vine and wrap the remaining wire around the vine all the way back to the unit itself, on the cage door.

I use the units from LLL, I believe they are Zilla units. Just keep the sensor out of direct drips if you can. That way it will always give you a stable, and accurate reading.

yeah.... 40-50% is a good amount of humidity... right now I can keep my cham room at just under and just over 60%

This is the room..... so the cages afer misting prolly spike... This is also running a fan and keeping the window open 24/7

Later this summer it will get dry and I will have to keep things closed up and with AC on....
