EU to phase out non energy efficeint light bulbs

This won't affect most people on here as most people are in the US, having said that it will probably happen there sooner rather than later.

The EU is phasing out standard household light bulbs in 2010 but most shops are already stopping the sale of them. The exo terra bulbs are, I think, included in this phasing out. As you may or may not know the exo terra bulbs are a con, here in the UK they cost £6 (nearly $12) when they do exactly the same job as normal spot bulbs that cost 90p for 2 from a supermarket. As I understand it the energy efficient bulbs are not good enough to provide enough heat for a basking spot. What I would like to know is what would you recommend as an alternative heat source for chameleons without these bulbs?

tungsten incandescent bulbs will be phased out in Canada also. right now my plan is to buy a few thousand cheap bulbs before they do.

I would assume this change has to have been in the works for some time. Someone has to be looking into developing (or already developed) 'green' reptile lighting that is sufficient to replace what is on the market now. This will affect many animal hobbyists (I have salt water fish which use similar lighting requirements).

Interesting. Have you spoken with any of the pet supply shops to see if there is an alternative solution to replace the outgoing product?

My local pet store seems to think that lamps made specifically for reptiles and such will be exempt. But they suggest already over-priced bulbs will increase in price as factories close with dropping demand.

The EU should cease to exist! Destruction of government at its worst (so far).

Anyway, I feel like this issue will resolve itself. Either special interest products like reptile lamps will be exempt, or more environmentally-friendly products will emerge.

As far as i'm aware the halogen bulbs will be still be around for quite some time. Does anyone use halogen bulbs for basking? if so would I keep them the same watt as the normal bulbs? my normal bulbs currently reach 90f at the basking spot. If the halogen bulbs will do the job then I have no complaints, 2 of them cost around £4 and will probably come down in price in a year or too, plus they last for ages. 2 for £4 is still better than 1 for £6, 1 that blows quite quickly from what i've heard.

The reptile lamps are not exempt :( but if they're halogen then it's ok as halogen bulbs are more energy efficient.

I couldn`t agree more the EU was the worst idea in history. I think i am forgetting how to think for myself these days i must be accustomed to being told what to do and think

Our shops are already begining to phase these out and people are also starting to stockpile them. Does anybody know of any suitable alternatives already on the market or should i be hoarding bulbs for future use ?

i have a 75w halogen bulb for my Bearded dragon, and i have to place it about 2 feet farther than with a normal bulb. they get hot hot hot.

I will be buying up all old stocks of 100 watt bulbs at the weekend for both my reptiles and for household use. The energy saving alternatives are very dim:(

Well good luck with that cause I went to Tescos today and there's none left and this has been reported in shops all over the place. Go for the halogen bulbs cause these are bright and still provide the heat.

They aren't getting rid of halogens right? Halogen spots are great (except for the price).

i got a 75w halogen in usa for 7$, but i get about 2years of life out of it, so i really cant argue about the price. as for incandescent bulbs, you can order them off of the internet.

Does anyone care to comment on the tiger penis video and the chinese and there pillaging of endangered species it made me sick to my stomach and i'm really not the peta type. This culture is so ignorant the think this crap is medicine its just disgusting!!!!!!!!!!:mad:

People have killed animals long ago-people kill each other, I dont think they will stop because of an animal going extinct.

I saw a show with trappers running pods of dolphins up on shore-taking the best looking animals for aquariums and then butchering the rest...looked like red oceon, that was sad-because dolphins can "talk" to each other-hearing your family get killed would be a bad way to go out.

Nah I think these are staying. Can get 2 for about £5 here and as other people use them on here i'm gonna try them when all my normal bulbs run out. Do you get the 75w ones to replace the 100w incandescent ones?
