Breeding Silkworms

To start off, ill start with the size of a small silkworm. youll need lots and lots of food. either a mulberry tree of commercial brand silkworm chow that can be bought at our sponsor mulberryfarms.com. you should have them in a container with some what ventalation and clean. i personally clean mine 2-3 times a DAY its a killer. after that they go through 5 stages in their lives called instars. when there in there last instar the 5 one they get little red marks on top of their heads (not all species). make sure they always have a constant supply of food either freash mullberry leaves of silkworm chow never have dried chow or dried leaves.

Now they are at there last instar you should be feeding alot they will let out big frass (poop) and wet splats all over the place.:eek:i know nasty:p. then put toilet paper rolls all over (with out the paper). they will crawl in there when ready and spin. DON NOT DISTURB them they will stop and start over they done have unlimited silk. once there done in 2-3 days you can take it out and wiggle it and here a rattle. out them in a container with little ventaltion and paper towles on the bottom. they will hatch in about 2-3 weeks.

Now they are moths. the moths will let out a red liquid (poo and Pee). they dont eat so dont give them food. they will stay locked but to but for about 24 hours. (P.S. the bigger cocoon is usually the female ) when they are done the female will lay yellow golden eggs.

I HAVE EGGS!!! now wait about a week for all eggs to turn grey or dark blue. after that immedietly put them in a ziplock and put it in the crisper in the fridge. if they dont turn grey in that week they problaly arent fertile. now keep them in there for 2 months or longer.

2 months is here, now put them in a container with air holes and a small damp sponge and keep that container in the closet around 75-85 degrees mine are at 88 right now. they should hatch with in 7 days are later if they dont hatch within by 2 weeks they problaly didnt brake out of dipause (time in the fridge).

THEY HATCHED!!! CONGRADULATIONS!! now have alot of food ready they will be little black hairy worms and eat alot. keep there cage clean!!! now they molted and where back to the top of the page!!:D

CONGRADULATIONS YOU JUST BRED SILKWORMS!!!:D
