Verrucosus

Here are the two Furcifer verrucosus wild caught (WC) i brought home two days ago!

The male is called Tim, while the female is named Calleigh! Both drank yesterday when i hand misted them, and the female also ate. Today, my girlfriend and I bought for 25$ of silkworms and hornworms, and they both ate a few. You can imagine how happy we are to see them doing fairly good for WC animals! :D

Enough talking, here are the pictures! :)

Those are also called the Giant Spiny Chameleon right? Those look like they are fun to watch.

For some reason looking at the male's picture, I feel like he's going to turn blue, roll up into a ball, and zoom off (sonic reference) I kid.

You are so lucky to have received such a good looking pair of WC's!
I hope they do well for you and that you soon (well in a year or so) have some nice little ones from them!

@Texas: Thank you! :) I was actually thinking about doing it, but i didn't because the female tends to get to the very lowest part of her enclosure to look for food. So i thought leaving her a second plant down there could make her feel better and more hidden. I don't know what you and others think about my position! :)

@Kongchi: Yes they are also called Giant Spiny or Warty chameleons. And sadly i don't think Tim comes from Morondava (the Verrucosus with some blue), so calling him Sonic is not working! :p But yes, they are fun to watch. Compared to Delko, my Sambava, they are way slower, and more natural!

I just noticed that Tim has his inside feet orange, and i remember reading a post about a verrucosus having the same characteristic. However i don't have any picture of it yet. I think they have been pictured enough for the last few days! ;)

Thats interesting my panthers all tend to hunt near the top of their enclosures and let the feeders come to them where they ambush tthem. Cool hearing about the differences in species habits and behaviors.

Well, these are my observations. Delko, my Sambava, also roams in the lowest part and accept food very fast in these moments. Then again, i only tested it with 3 chameleons so far, so i could easily be wrong! :) But this is something i thought possible. *shrug*.

Long story made short, i went to an awesome petstore in Quebec city, and talked with the manager for an hour. I told him i was looking for a couple of Verrucosus and a female Sambava. He replied that he is supposed to go hunting for new chameleons in Montreal soon, and if he could find a good and healthy pair he would call me back. A few weeks later he got me those, for a very fair price!! :)

The alleged female is looking more like a female. I recalled female Verrucosus look similar to female panthers. Looks like they are the brown head Verrucosus. Congratulations!!

It's not like you didn't worry for them either Kiny!!! :D I know you will plaid (plead) guilty!! :p

@Motherlode: Yes, it looks more obvious now. Sadly i couldn't control her colors when i first visited her at the petstore! :p I also got some very valuable comments from Chris Anderson and Niels from www.Kamaeleoner.dk and both were agreeing with the sex and subspecies. So that, coupled with the Chams1's female pictures, i can say that i am now fairly confident that it's a female! :) What i like from her is the red and orangeish colors, and also the light green on the legs. Females are so much more colorful than most species of chameleons (even if they can't beat the Lateralis!!).

I still can't understand why Verrucosus are so underrated! They can accept higher temperatures and lower temperatures than Pardalis, lower humidity, they have gorgeous colors, and the shapes of the spines and size is perfect to me. So far, i really like my purchase!! :)

I did worry about you transporting them and I worried about them being WC's until I saw the pictures. I was sure they were a pair until others started questioning it...and then I had to check again to be sure....but I had never seen a male with such short spines or that circle pattern.

I don't know if verrus are really under-rated or if its more that people tend to stay away from WC's...and verrus don't come in all that often (at least in Canada).

Also...I found the males to be more nervous and more active than the females...and yet more people seem to think the opposite.

Hopefully some of us will have some CB babies to start distributing them sooner or later! I know a few members have some breeding projects with them at the moment. At least 3 of them are in the US, and i am the only one i know in Canada.

About which one is the most active and most nervous, i have had them for 3 days now, so I really don't know! :p

i have a quick question, i feel like a noob for asking this but what does wild caught mean? i thought it was illegal to catch chameleons in their natural habitat and keep them. or do i have the completely wrong idea? plz answer??!

Wild Caught animals are not always illegal. It depends of the species they are, and also in what country you are. Some chameleons can only be imported in a maximum number, and it all depends on their species.

WC animals are what you believe: they come from their natural habitat, and are brought to various countries like USA, France, Germany, and also Canada.

An example of illegal exportation/importation is Chamaeleon Chamaeleon.

The main idea is usually to not get wild caught animals because most of them die in the process of getting into Occident, as they are being roughly handled, stressed out, malnourished (if not starved), and they often are parasited. I remember reading a report saying that 90% of the WC animals brought to the United-States died within the first year of their importation...

Lol, I just realized something. Is that bubble wrap on the bottom of the enclosure? if so, good idea! I had my 2 month old fall 18 inches to the bottom of her enclosure today =(
