hi,

I have a zoo med 100w powersun mercury vapour bulb. i have it mounted inside my tank at the top and currently have it in a ceramic holder with a plant pot surrounding it to help retain heat when it switches off on the timer. i was wondering, what size lamp holder would i need to buy? i want to buy the exo terra reflector 1 that glows in the dark. they come in 3 different sizes. what size would i need? does anyone have the same setup?

Take it out of the tank now before a tail or back gets burnt. The lights should be on the outside as a tail can be burnt so bad that it pretty much just falls off.

First you need to share some more info.
1) What do you mean by tank?
2) What species of chameleon do you have?
3) Why do you need to retain the heat of a 100w mercury vapor bulb?
4) Why do you need a reflector to glow in the dark?

Probably the largest of the fixtures. You're going to want to keep that bulb AT LEAST 12" away from the closest spot a chameleon could reach, due to the UVB levels, not to mention the heat. In order to get the heat right, the UVB levels may be wrong and visa versa. Unless you have a UVB meter to determine what is a safe distance from the lamp to the basking spot, and a temp gun, you're just guessing. Most recommend a separate UVB tube (often the ReptiSUN 5.0) and heat bulb (often a regular incandescent household 60watt)

Yeah... the heat from the ceramic pot isn't gonna do much for more than say.... 5-10 minutes tops? why do you want the glowing reflector? I have one that I got from someone givng away clip lights. I use it on my babies cage (just cause its what i had left) and it doesn't glow for more than a few minutes... quite useless and something I would NEVER pay extra for. AND you have the lamp in your possesion... do you have a tape measure or ruler handy? the 5.5" clip light should work.

ok, not much help there then, lol. when i say tank, i mean what i say, a glass tank. its a custom built tank designed for chameleons before you all jump on my back and say chameleons cant lve in glass tanks. also, my chams cant reach the bulb, its about a foot away from to closest plant/vine. i only wanted 1 because i dont just want a bare light bulb hanging there. is that what you all reccomend?

How big of a tank is what I meant.
I would use a fixture rated for a 100w bulb or bigger.
The basking area temps depend on what species your keeping.
As far as the glow-n-the dark dome .....ha ha I got some glow in the dark stickers you can put on the side of your "Tank"

Where in the world do you live?

You need a 10" dome reflector for that bulb. Also, be very careful as they get extremely hot. So make sure to keep good track of temps. to make sure it isn't getting too hot, especially in glass. You don't want to burn a cham. So as long as it isn't too hot 12" away from a perch as you mentioned it should be ok. Make 110% sure the cham. can't touch that bulb or it will get burnt horribly. If used correctly, that bulb works well and the dome you mentioned is expensive but I like it.

We don't automatically say a cham can't live in a glass tank...but that they can cause problems. They can overheat easily without enough venting or air exchange. Stagnant air can breed bacteria and mold if they stay too wet. They don't necessarily provide a gradient of temp or humidity that chams need for thermoregulation. In a solid sided tank I don't think you will need a hood for that lamp, but you'll need to test different parts of the cage with a good accurate thermometer.
