Zoo Med Excavator Clay Burrowing Substrate

I am currently renovating our female veiled's habitat and am setting up a designated lay-zone (essentially leaving space for a lay bin). I just discovered the existence of the Zoo Med excavator clay. Would this be good to use mixed with sand? Or should I just stick the the sand? Or sand and soil? So many mixed messages out there!

I would just stick with sand or sand/soil mix. While I haven’t used excavator clay for anything, I suspect it may be too dense and take extra effort to dig thru.

I misspoke. It hardens when it dries out following being moistened, but kept moist, should maintain some plasticity.


We're looking at it for the future tortoise. Tortoises love to burrow.
