Yummy Adult Locusts!

Miss Lily

Chameleon Enthusiast
I opened a tub of locusts yesterday, only to find that some of the locusts had turned into adults complete with wings!! Before when this happened I didn't feed them to Lily as I thought that she wasn't big enough, but actually its only the length of the wings that makes them look so big! I used to hate locusts, but this one was actually quite pretty! :D As soon as Lily saw it her head swung round and she zapped it! Poor locust didn't stand a chance! Here is that pretty locust just moments before it met its fate!!

Hi Tiff, how big is Lily now? Do you use locusts as your staple? I have been trying but Hugo does prefer his crickets! I much prefer handling locusts though. How big are the locusts that you are feeding?

I haven't actually measured Lily, but she's nearly 18 months old so I presume that she's fully grown now. The locusts I bought were a tub of extra large and they just shed their skin for the last time to emerge as adults. I measured one and its 6cms long from head to the tip of the wings. She has a mix of locusts, crix and supers as her staple (when she actually eats anything). But her fave at the moment is the adult locusts! Have you tried Hugo with Silkworms yet?

Mista loves to eat locusts almost to the exclusion of anything else.
They make me a bit jumpy no pun intended.
all the time i can deal with them without touching them i am fine.
I do however get fasinated watching them, how they hold their hands in their front feet while they nibble, how they sort of hide when you look at them.so much so that sometimes i feel sorry that i am taking them to their fate.

I buy locusts locally - the place where I got Lily. I get tubs of extra large and there's about 10 in each tub. They are more expensive than crickets, but they don't smell and aren't noisy!

No, i haven't tried him on silkworms yet, i really should order some. We tried him on Morio worms and he hated them, so gave them to the girl at the petstore with a Beardie. i try to alternate, so one day he will have 6-10 crickets, the other day 6-10 locusts. Prefer the locusts (especially now the crickets have taken to climbing on him if they get out) but he won't eat them permanently :(. he has the medium locusts, but i try to keep them for a few weeks to get them bigger, so they are maybe about 4cm?

I loved that picture of Lily. She is a pretty cham. I have never tried feeding the adult locusts to the chams. They usually go to the boscs instead LOL. Maybe I have been depriving them of the extra special pink locusts?

Wow if there's only 10 in a tub how much do you spend a week on cham food? i was really pissed this week when i got my medium locuts home and saw there was only about 20 in it thats not even 3 days worth of food and was £3.20! on a avarge week my cham cost more to feed than my horse!!!

She doesn't eat much at the moment. When I first got her She would eat a tub per day plus some crickets! I only pay £2.00 per tub anyway. Where do you buy your food?

i get them from our local garden/reptile shop to be honest i think every thing there is very over priced! is there any online places you could recommed in the uk?

I get chams food from www.livefoodsdirect.co.uk i buy about 100 large locusts at a time for about £15. (they do other sizes or crickets as well). Keep them in chams old glass viv, and feed them kale and reptiluxe Progrub food. They are quite good from here. Occasionally get the odd free cricket or two in with the locusts too :p ( plus free delivery! :) )
