Your B.Dubia colony heat source....

11" heat tape with a temp controler set at 90. I taped the 11" heat tape to a plywood platform with foil tape and set my dubia tubs right on top of it. I got the heat tape and temp controller from big apple herp. I use the cheap tubs from home depot ($5-$6 each) and cut a 3-4" hole in the top for ventalation. Easiest feeder to keep IMO.

I dont have Dubias, but i do have discoids which are similar.
I use an exoterra heat pad
Rubbermaid container (dark)
Of course it can get too hot, but if you have proper ventilation you should be fine

I had a small colony before and never really provided them with much heat. Just had the small tub i had them in on the top of one of my Cham's cage near the heat lamp.
I just got a 500+ count "starter" colomy to add to my existing colony. They will now all be going into a 30g rubbermaid bin. I will now have to provide this bin with the proper heat source.. (i have an extra 8" dome heat lamp and 2 extra heat pads.)
Which of the 2 should i use.. My concern with the heat mat is that it may be too large and provide too much heat.

If it were me, I would put one heatpad on the side and one on the bottom. Just make sure you have your eggcrates stacked vertically so the roaches can get away from the heat if they need to.

FYI - If you're ever thinking of breeding chams and need to grow your own pinheads get enough heat tape to put another bin on it with adult crickets and the tubs for them to lay eggs. I have about 8' running off the same temp controller and its working great. This heat tape is great for many applications in reptile keeping.

here's the one i'm using. i put it under my dubia tub and i've measured the temp and it goes well above 90 degrees. it doesn't auto shut off so it's on 24/7. i keep one under and on top of my breeders bin and then stack the feeder bin on top of the breeders bin.

I have Verizon as my TV company and the cable boxes they provide put out a LOT of heat. I put my Dubia bin on top of this cable box and they are growing SO FAST. I had 500 tiny nymphs a month ago and now they are almost all adults...insane!

I did think about it. But my cablebox in it my entertainment center with a frosted glass door that teh remote controle waves go through. lol
I can't fit the bin in there. Wish i could.

Will the heating wire thing mentioned before melt through a rubbermaid container.? I was thinking of doing this for my own starter colony I'm buying but didn't know of it would melt it.

I don't either. Ambient room temp ranges from about 50 on up to nearly 90 where I keep the tubs (up high by the ceiling) depending on time of year and whether it is day or night. Mostly 70-80. They still breed and produce babies.
However-
My son just finished an experiment on metabolism and growth rate using some of my incubators to raise hissers at different temps. The different growth rates at higher temperatures were dramatic enough that I am tempted to use empty incubators to raise roaches when I don't need them for lizard eggs...

I use an old bed heat pad (like for old people, its a small square like the size of a sheet of paper) i set it to medium and put it on the top of the big holder, underneath the cricket egg bin, seems to work great..

So i set my bin up lastnight... tried some things that didn't work..and some that did.
1st i placed the mat on the inside of the bin..(the sticky side of the pad is what produces the heat, i didn't realize untill i felt the outside of the bin where the pad was.
(wrong way) lol
the temps and humidity it showed this way..
So i took the mat out and placed it on the bottom of the bin on the outside..This was much better. Then set probes on the inside about 3" above the side of the bin with the heat pad.
(note , this pic was b4 i removed the matt from the side)
This was much better. (this was with the Dubias in and no vent hole yet.)Humidity was a bit high. Inside of the bin was sweating a bit.
This was the temp after a vent was made in the lid. Humidity went down a bit , as did the temp a bit.

honestly I have just had them in my closet the average temp is about 68-70 degrees farenheit. I just yesterday put a heating pad underneath. But just a plain old zoo-med one that you plug in and voila! I use a human heating pad under my ball python's cage and I used to use it for them as well, it has 3 heat settings.

This was the air temp a little above the floor of the bin. The floor felt really warm to the touch. I assume it was in the mid 90's. I will get a strip thermometer for the floor today (if i can find one that reads up to 100*).
This way i would have air temp from the probes and a surface temp of the floor.
The Dubias really like the heat. They were muchhh more active this morning and i say a few females with a "ooth-like" case attached to their rears.
