k so im at my girlfriends and all i hear is OMG!. her pygmy has been acting up since we got it. it is WC. and by acting up he's been looking through either one eye, or looks sleeping. but moves alot, is very alert, drinks and eats. what was veryyyy scary just now, was one of his one eye popped out, to the point where it looked like it was going to expload (like that black chick from guniess world records)! he still managed to look around with it, it wasnt close, and after a minute he retracted it back into his skull. is this normal at all?
i dont have time to fill out a sheet right now. but his age is unknown, hes a male. misted 2 times a day. handled maybe once since we've had it. shes had the pygmies a week tomorrow. max temp is between 72-75 in day. drops to mid 60s at night. diet of crickets, dusted one feeding every other day. a few without d3 a few with.

please help. were in the midsts of moving so we will be back shortly to see posts!

she is running an up-to-date 2.0 exo clf. but it is elevated about a foot away from any vines. the eye now (about 10 minutes later) is fine, with no signs of swelling or stress. i just need to know if this is normal! i want some answers other than scrap the bulb. again its elevated atleast a foot away, and weve only had these guys a day short of a week.

Sorry, but scrap the bulb. Put it a foot away from your face and stare at it for a minute. Now think about staring at it for 12 hours.

Doesn't sound normal to me  Keeping in mind i don't know much about pygmy's. Sound like he might have some kind of eye infection or maybe something might be in it. Is he rubbing his eye at all? You said his eye was open when it was puffed up? if so try and look into the problem eye and see if it look clear. You can also try rinsing the eye with a saline solution. I know you said you guys were busy but a pic would def help. Also maybe some pygmy experts will chime in but those temps seem a little low????

Didn't see the post about the bulb but yeah, I would get rid of that too. Chams can pop their eyes out of the socket though so it might be normal. Just a little bit freaky looking.:D

hey guys thanks for the helping out. whew glad it is normal. my gf did some reading while i was loading up the car and said that chameleons sometimes do that when their thirsty, they pop their eye out and suck water through it. lol friggen weird animals. but thank god. lisa, thank you so much for the constructive criticism. i knew the bulb issue was coming up and that was actually pretty smart aleck. but when your in the middle of moving and at this point is all you can afford thats all you can afford. the bulb will be upgrade asap. so that is why i said leave out the bulb issue.
to the other poster, when the cham popped his eye out, it was perfectly clear. no blood, no blood vessels popped. no swelling. if this is normal. good. thank god, we have now named him "popeye"

You said..."chameleons sometimes do that when their thirsty, they pop their eye out and suck water through it"....never! I'd love to see where she read this!

They do/can bulge their eyes out when they are cleaning them though and that is normal. If the eye stays bulged out then its a problem.

My criticism wasn't too constructive, but I felt the need to say it anyway :)
I hadn't heard about the eye popping thing, so I'm glad you got some answers on that. As I will be getting more pygmies soon, I'll have to remember this can happen. Would have freaked me out!!
BTW, "Popeye". That's too funny!!! Enjoy him!

I agree the bulbs are bad but because of mixed levels of uvb radiation not because it is "too bright". Try staring at the sun for 12 hours...

i never read it, probably means they expand their eyes to hydrate themselves with water from their crests. i dunno i aint no doctor. nore did i read it. i would like to see where she read this too, but too late now.

and sooo many issues were with earlier models made by zoo med or zilla. many products are now (including zoomed or zilla) reformulated to be retna safe. and for this i make sure that if all i can grab is a clf, i make sure it is the newest product made. dont be a smarty man, try looking at ANY light for even a couple minutes! i couldnt even bare flourescents for too long. and honestly. i realy dont think any animal sits there gawking at a light for too long either. unless of course your a fly or something.
