so i went to petco yesterday to pick up some superworms, and on one of the chameleon tanks i saw a sign that read "baby veiled, special needs, cannot use back legs, 50% off" and i asked the guy what happened. he said it was great a couple weeks ago but the legs got worse, and i explained to him it was mbd! he was clueless..i told him how to prevent it in the future..but we'll see if they do anything.. -.- poor veiled..if only i had the room, id haggle them to like $20 if that..

anyone wanna make a trip to altoona pa to get him?? :) like i said, if i had another setup, id get him in a heartbeat, but i dont think linus would be too happy with a cage mate :/ more than likely the veiled will die in the store, or be sold to someone with good intentions, no experience, and wrong information :( i hate big chain pet stores...i get my crix from a small family owned store thats 45 minutes away, if it wasnt so far away, id go there for everything i need and never give the chain stores my time of day...but, as soon as i turn 18, im applying at petco, to work in the aquatics/reptile dept, and ill make sure it doesnt happen again...its the least i could do..

Amanda that sounds good but part of the problem is Petco corporate dictates how the stores set up and maintain chameleons and all other animals. You could make a difference by getting it water, correct light etc, but caging and some of that is out of the control of the individual store. I have had that battle with their corp offices a large # of times.:(

im not really too worried about the caging, but their lighting is wayy off, their supplementation is wrong, their feeders, and the whole lot...but the way i want to help is to fix the little things, like the lighting, the supplements, the feeders, and to correctly advise people on their proper care! not just hand them a care sheet with crap...they have the right stuff in the store, so its not like ill be going against them and telling them to go to another store, i can sell just as much stuff, but the RIGHT stuff to maintain a cham :) if i can make a difference in one chams life, its worth it, and may even help new hobbyist get on the right path.

Yes it is a shame. I'd send you a cage if I had an extra :( . Is the mbd in early or late stage last time you checked? ( if you could tell)
Petsmart to me, is better than petco since they have a vet on staff, and give you a care sheet with your purchase, but still neither is good when it comes to reptiles. Ive seen a dead leo in front of one of Petco's display cages before. It wasnt a good site.

i couldnt really tell, he was hanging on the divider seperating it from the other cham, kinda hidden behind a plastic vine, but it was clear it wasnt using its back legs, just kinda hanging there, wouldnt move while i was watching it :/ the other cham was new and in great condition, a panther, but the veiled has been there several weeks...

Yea its weird how policy is different throughout individual stores. I don't care much for pet co but do get quality expensive large crickets in a pinch from them . Anyways the store Here in Avon , Ohio will not house any chameleons ever. They may advertise in ad but you have to pre order with deposit so they aren't sitting in store being cared for. For all I know they just ship it from another store that has them  but in theory that sounded pretty good idea i thought. So chameleons are not in store fronts.
