Worms, worms, and more worms.

Ok guys this is getting gross. My beautiful Amadeus that i was so worried about (having a URI and was closing his eyes and not eating or drinking or doing anything) is loaded with worms. I just can't figure out how and how so many. I've had him for 8 mos. His first fecal came back clean and because he was suppose to be c/b by a reputable breeder i didn't bother doing another one. I know, i want do that again. When i brought him to the vet this time they did another fecal and said he had roundworms so i started him on Pancur for 3 days. Well he had so many coming out of him i waited 1 day and gave him another dose and SURPRISE. MORE WORMS. And they are big ones too. Gross. I think i should give him another dose tomorrow. i know you are suppose to wait 2 weeks to do another treatment, but with him having so many of them i thought that maybe doing a 3 day treatment then again every other day for 2 weeks might work better. I just don't want to wait another 2 weeks i'm afraid by then he'll have too many and go into toxic shock. What do ya think?:

I dont have experience with panacur but everyone ive talked to that is experienced with the drug using it on WC chams say its a very safe drug and very difficult to overdose on. Maybe chris carter will chime in, he knows his stuff about this drug.

I won't over ride your vets prescription, but I will tell you my own regime.

When I have a wormy cham , I administer Panacur once every 7 days until no more visible worms are observed. Then I adminsiter every 14 days for 3 more dosages.

Panacur does not kill the worms directly . It blocks carbohydrate absorption of the worms , so that they starve. Administering 3 doses at 14 day intervals after the death of the last worm, endures that any hatching eggs are also destroyed. Panacur can only indirectly kill live worms , not the eggs.

Once thats complete, you may want to do a follow up fecal within 3 months.

Panacur is a pretty safe drug, and I will admit that my first experience with it I gave my chameleon ohh about 10x too much, I thought the concentration was a lot more diluted than it was. The chameleon was a little stressed from the overdose but she ended up doing great (and let me say there is no way she has worms...lol) I do know that there are different regimens for Panacur (depending on which parasite you are trying to overcome). So, that being said, I am no vet but I do use my fair share of Panacur and I would say you will be safe doing a 3 day in a row cycle, 3 weeks in a row. If your chameleon loses appetite or vomits then definitely stop the treatment for a few days.

Do you have to get Panacur from the vet or can you order it? I have heard you guys talk about all these different treatments and wonder where you get your supply of meds for your herp medicine cabinet.

Panacur and Flagyl are two common parasite treatments that I get from the vet. For infections I use Fortaz which I get from the vet. For slight eye issues you can get Terramycin from a feed store.

Chroma,

How do you dilute the Panacur? I was told by the vet to use the 10% which is what i used. I ordered that right on line. But i didn't dilute it because he said that 10% ws the right dosage.

And thanks for the input. I think i will try that regiment. 7 days straight or until no more worms come out then repeat.
