Wooden cage

Darci and I got a few new wooden cages; here is a 16x16x30. How do yall like it? We may start to sell them if the interest is high enough.

If you don't mind, I have one question! How did you manage to fix the aluminium mesh in place? You've made it look really tidy. I'm -still- planning my build atm and the only thing I can really think of when working with wood is going at it with a staple gun which won't look great... Any tips would be appreciated!

All it takes is a small groove cut in the wood along the very edge of the screen I believe. From there you use a rubber seal the size of the outer diameter of the screen and press the screen into the groove with the rubber seal, where it is held in place, aybe also use a little bit of glue or silicone? I dunno...Is that how you did it Chad? Looks great! What kind of wood did you use?

Is the wood sealed? I can't imagine why it wouldn't be, but it doesn't look it from the pictures.

Other than that they look pretty good.

for a channel like that? seems drastically easier to me to just set up the table saw to do it.. I'd groove all the boards before I even cut them to length.

The screen is just as strong as the screen in a regular window screen cage, the grove is made by a table saw and like Joe said, the screen is laid out, the spline pressed into the grove holding the screen taut and in place then the excess trimmed. Also, it is very easy to replace should the screen get damaged.

The wood has been stained with a water resistant wax based sealer; this particular cage was done so with a very natural color, if I offer the cages I will likely have a pick your own color option for a fee lest you want a standard color that I have yet to decide on. I will also likely have colored bottoms to choose from.

Price, I want to keep them affordable... A normal 16x30 screen cage can be purchased from LLL for $55; I would likely sell this cage for $80. And of course custom sizes can be made, I plan to make a bakers rack sized cage for all my rack kin, finaly, 3 large sized cages per shelf!

A router was what I was thinking of! Don't know if my old man has a table saw that I can use, but I'll definitely ask him. He probably does somewhere!

I'll have to try and find some spline stuff. I don't know where I could get it from!
