Hello, I am going to be a first time Chameleon owner and have been doing research and looking all over the web at Cages and Chameleons. I would like to get a panther chameleon. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what type of cage I should buy and where and what products I should get(ie lighting, food, thermostat). I am on a budget and am looking to spend around 400-500 on everything(including the chameleon). If anyone has thought and suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks for you time and I know you will help point me in the right direction.
 
I wouldn't suggest a chameleon if you absolutely can't spend more than 500. You will need to set aside a hefty sum of money for emergency vet visits BEFORE you get your chameleon. Start saving up!
 
Thanks for the comment pssh. The price range though is just for starup and the chameleon and I will have money for future cost.
 
Well thats good. I would go to LLLreptile.com then. Except for the UVB hood, Incadescent bulb, dome for incandescent bulb, hand pump mister, and thermometer and hygrometer. Those can be bought at Lowes/home depot for a lot cheaper. If you're very thrifty, you may only spend about $300 for the set up and have $200 left for a chameleon.
 
Also, breeders like The Chameleon Company or Chameleons101 have good prices on their chameleons, often selling beautiful animals for less than $200. If you look around at breeder websites you can see what prices they have currently and see if you find the chameleon for you at a price you like.

Pssh has given good tips for everything else you need :)

a screen cage is a must and and there are different sizes for the age of the chameleon , once an adult a panther needs at least a 2' x 2' x 4' screen cage.

zoomed reptisun "linear" tube 5.0 uvb (not the coil/compact can cause eye probs)...

heat lamp(any houseware bulb about 60-75 watss depends on temps .the basking area 80-85 degrees, everywhere else 70-78 degrees .and at night 65-70 degrees (you dont need a light at night , they sleep at night

get feeder insects by a good store or online your choice (check our sponsors:D) gutload them with veggies and fruits

digital thermometer and hydrometer

live plants (ficus, hibiscus, pothos) and lots of different sizes of branches..

spray bottle to mist, and dripper, they only drink off ieaves and dripper

I think you'll be ok (to start) with $500 if you're lucky to get a healthy cham from a reputable breeder. I would recomend building your own screen cage, keeping in mind you future cham's age, in order to save some bucks. you will most likely only be able to get a juvenile with around $200 bucks.

However, the most important things are that you become informed on the needs of your future pet, and don't hesitate to spend whatever is needed on his well being, most importantly I would recomend taking to a herp vet to have him checked up once you have him. As time goes on you'll realize that there is no such thing as a set budget when you have a pet and should look into breeding the food supply in order to keep your costs low.

I have two boys from Amazing blue reptiles that have been super healthy and they have great prices. They do not post available Chams. on their website, all you have to do is email them and they will send you pics of what they have available.
 
LLL Reptile is a good place to get your supplies from. As Pssh said there are items you don't need to buy from them because there are cheaper places. Home Depot and Lowe's will have the light hoods and clip lights you'll need. I suggest you buy a dual 18" or 24" T8 light fixture from one of those stores. Buy a Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 and a Zoo Med NatureSun, the same size as the light fixture you got from the hardware store. The NatureSun will keep the plants alive, and the cage brighter. 6500K lamps generate light that is similar to the light from the sun.

Here is what you should buy from LLL Reptile;

  • LLL Reptile screen cage.
  • Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 UVB linear tube.
  • Zoo Med NatureSun linear tube lamp.
  • Fake vines.
  • Stickey Tongue Calcium supplement (yellow and red top).
  • Rep-Cal Herptivite .

Things to buy at Home Depot, Lowe's, OSH or your local equivilant.

  • Linear fluorescent fixture (for linear UVB light).
  • 5" or 8" utility clip light (for heat lamp).
  • Par20 50w halogen flood lamp.
  • Ficus or scheflera plant (get dirt andsand to repot plant).
  • digital 'in/out door' thermemeter with humidity ($14 at Lowes).
  • Wall timer for lights.
  • Pump up spray bottle to misting.
 
Have u seen the beginners chameleon package that screameleons is advertising? I think its 300.00 and it comes witha female of your choice. They might be willing to sub a male for a female for a few bux more. You'd have to call vince and ask him. But its a very good way to get started and then you'd just need an adult cage in 6 months when they are ready for more room. Good luck...

Oh. I forgot about that. That would be a great way to get started. Then once he/she is ready for an adult cage you can get a one from DIYcages.com They have really good prices. I got my adult cage from them for under $100 bucks, with free shipping. That would really be a great way for you to start.
