A favorite of mine! First species we officially encountered out in the bush on our first day's drive into Madagascar's rural eastern regions. One male tiptoeing his way across a hot, tar-soaked timber bridge over a rain swollen stream. "Bridge" was a euphemism. The longitudinal tread planks and cross timbers were loose, the structure creaked and groaned and the whole thing had a bit of a sway to it as our Peugeot wagon crept over it. There were no guardrails at all, just naked untrimmed ends of the cross members leaving barely enough room for pedestrians. As we got close to the far end, one of the tread planks flipped up and wedged itself against the Peugeot's exhaust, stopping it in its tracks. We had to back up and maneuver the car multiple times to work it free. Luckily the little guy was close enough to the end of the bridge it felt safe enough to pour ourselves out the doors and coax him onto a stick. He was pale and gaping with the heat, but still furious with us and went into full court dress trying to intimidate us. I adored him and really wanted to sneak him back to the US in my carryon. Turned out to be the only willsii we saw. Maybe because he was the first, but one of my most vivid wild cham encounters. Give me anything with rostrals, I'm happy! Glad to hear someone is working with them, hopefully to establish a safe captive population.
