i live in cali, about 45 minutes from sacramento.

i looked at 3 petstores and couldnt find one... btw, whats a compact? i bought an 18" strip light... is that okay?

PS- i saw an old thread just after posting this about the same question... and something called photo-kerato-conjunctivitis came up... im thinking my cham may have this as we have exhausted nearly every avenue of treatment... http://www.uvguide.co.uk/phototherapyphosphor-info.htm here is a link on it... his previous owner had him set up with 2-48" uvb 10. strip lights and an 1-18" repti glo 5.0.... she said the 10.0s were old, so i have kept them in there just to light up the cage, but im thinking of turning them off for a few days to see if it clears up... not the repti glo 5.0 tho, that needs to stay on im sure... but im thinking maybe his eye is acting up really bad because theres maybe too much UVB goin on in his cage  we'll see, hopefully it can be this simple. btw, he is on an anti biotic and if this one doesnt work, he is being refered to a reptile optomologist at UC Davis, ca... talk about EXPENSIVE! but if thats what will make him better... hopefully this will work tho

reptiglo or reptisun

cfl stands for compact fluorescent light, they are the ones with the folded or somtimes curly tube and screw into a regular houshold socket. linear are the long tube ones. your reptiglo will do for now, but uvb should be replaced as often as every 6 months, and when it is due for replacement, you should get a genuine reptisun uvb 5.0, they are the ones with the most established track history, and i believe they are the only one that uses a pure quartz tube. just for the record you can probably find one online for cheaper than a retail store. if your cham is showing signs of photo-kerato-conjunctivitis, or other optical distress, i would definitely junk all bulbs and get him a genuine reptisun 5.0, and then take him to the vet. if you live in cali it would be in your interest to attend either a meeting of http://www.chameo.org/workshops.html or sbck. contact cf member Dave Weldon for further info jmo

thank you... he will definately get a SUN 5.0 when this one expires... this one was just an emergency purchase... i might just buy one online and return this one when the other comes in the mail... i always heard to buy reptisun so glo made me a little uncomfortable, but i figured he needs something to get him along in the mean time :) thanks for the help guys

if you order from LLL it'll come next day via UPS ground.

Reptisun is better... i'd wait one day for one instead of buying th exo terra.

id love to buy from LLL because their prices are really good... but id be throwing my money away. thats where his previous bulb came from and it hardly lasted 2 weeks before burning out... and i dont have the box any more... so im dealing mroe locally now and keeping boxes and reciepts. i plan on just returning this one after i find a reptisun close to home in a few days... im sure they have one in the next town over, i just gotta call around

EDIT: my last post is more of a last chance thing... i dont want to buy online if i dont have to, but its a last resort

Well, the good news is, by the time you'll need a new bulb the Sacramento show will be going on and you can pick up enough for the whole year for waaaaay less than pet store prices.

I don't seem to understand how it would be throwing money away. If your lamp died you can send it back to LLL or Zoo Med. Since you are in CA you'll have a new replacement within one day. If you have the receipt Zoo Med will send you a new lamp without you having to send them the old one. If you lost the receipt and can't get another one online from LLL or them faxing you something, then all you need to do is send Zoo Med the old lamp, and they'll send you a new one. They are located up north in California, you might even be able to drop it off yourself?

I had a bad lamp and no receipt, I shipped them the old lamp on a monday, and my replacement was at my door when I got home from work on wednesday that same week.

I second this. I had a bad bulb a while back and it was replaced. Thanks Kevin.

cool, well thanks guys, i will surely do this... i didnt even think it was possible because i dont have the box or reciept... ill try it for sure

I think Zoo Med is in San Luis Obispo...which is probably a bit far away. However, PTV, if you go with LLL try to do returns through Zoo Med. LLL believes in a 30 day warranty regardless of what the manufacturer says.

I don't think the package will matter as long as the lamp isn't broken.

If you purchased the lamp online, if you have confirmation email for your order, or you can log into LLL's site to see previous order (not sure if you can...) then you can most likely use a print out as your form of receipt. They just want to make sure you paid for the lamp before they ship a lamp out (if not sending them the 'bad' lamp).

Howdy Karen,

Here's a link some info (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/UVB_Meter_Owners/message/6886) from the UVB Meter Owners Group site posted by Dr. Baines (UVGuide) that suggests that the Exo Terra product line has gone through some manufacturing changes lately that may put both their CFL and their linear tubes in question. While versions from previous years were basically safe and effective, these recent changes bring the current product line into doubt. Until this issue is resolved, I'm still stuck with recommending the ZooMed Reptisun 5.0 linear tubes. As has been mentioned, ZooMed stands behind their product so if one of their products failed prematurely then just contact them and discuss the situation. Be sure that you are using a T8 size tube in a T8 compatible fixture and not mixing a T12 and a T8 product together otherwise premature failure will likely occur :(.
