white roaches

Wow Brian, I think you are right and I have Blaberus giganteus. Neat! Except...they get to be around 4 inches. Our biggest is 2.75. Do the dwarfs get that big?

We have had these guys for months and months. Originally we got them as nymphs for our Russian legless lizard and savannah monitor but they grew and we just kind of let them hang out and put them in with the hissers once we got them.

Any care suggestions?

They are cave roaches.
I have kept them before ... I got mine from lele on the forums.
Mine were huge!
Have you notice them releasing a defensive odor when they are bothered or scared?

Yeah, I think so too, cant really keep them like dubia, I think you can with the dwarfs, but not the giganteus. Are they breeding? They breed REALLY slow, well at least normal giganteus do. If there dwarf you can keep them like dubia I heard. I'll see what the guy I emailed says then post on this thread :) Its always good to buy roaches from reputable breeders so you know there pure etc :p

I have been keeping them in one side of my bin with the hissers- maintenance diet for the colony is dog food, veggie scraps and water crystals (I gutload for a week on my regular cricket gutload that is low protein and a blend of tons of veggies and powerfoods such as bee pollen, spirulina, hemp seed nuts, 10 grain cereal, wheat germ etc) I don't know if they or the hissers have bred, but I do have young. I can get photos of them if you want. Both bins are heated and the temp is in the mid 90s or so with a bit of a gradient. I haven't noticed any cannibalism.

I bought them as nymphs from our local reptile shop as an enrichment feeder so it didn't really matter what species they were- more of what size. This was before I started keeping roaches regularly and starting my colonies. I would say it was a good deal- $1 per dozen.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Grizz!

no p. that is quite the setup, my set up is gett-o compared to that. but it does give me some ideas.

Well, we found out there caves (b.fusca) :)

For future reference... what I was told:

"Frequntly a roach can be identified readily by a photo. Many of the Blaberus sp. can be tricky though, particularly since some of them have been inadvertantly hybridized within the insect hobby.

This photo appears to be a Blaberus fusca based on two certain markings:

1. The dark area on the pronotum is somewhere near 50% or slightly more of the pronotum and is roughly hexagonal and bearing a notch in the front corner.

2. Behind that under the clear overlap of the wings you can make out a pattern on the body that is similar to an arrowhead pointing toward the tail end of the specimen. This pattern may also appear inconsistantly on specimens of B. atropos as well.

3. The dark "U" shape pattern on the folded wings is consistant with B.fusca, however it also shows up within other species inconsistantly, so while it is a helpful guide it is not to be relied on.

Given the size and the two markings I would call it B. fusca."

It was fun ID'ing this roach :D Take care of the Fusca! BTW that looks like a discoid to me Grizz :D.

Thanks again, Brian! I will have some of these guys for sale later on if they decide to procreate.

You will have to talk to my girlfriend about that one- she is the one who will play with the roaches. They kind of freak me out.

Yea, i got creep crawly feel all over me when I saw the pictures! I havent seen these at any petstores in town. I found an individual selling 6 for 1.50. Is that price sound right or is there a better place to get them? I have 2 veileds.

I was going to buy some at a local reptile store and they wanted 50 cents apiece! Needless to say I didn't buy any.
