which are better for panther hatchlings?

Well, they eat them both the same. Hyedi it's bigger, but cultures grow way slower than melanogasters.

If I had to pick one, I would go with hyedi and prevent easily a month ahead with a few cultures to be ready when needed. Just because its bigger and it gives me the idea that they are eating more.

Hydei take about 3-4 weeks to have new flies - melanogaster are 10-14 days.

So a big difference in production, but hydei are substantially larger and would be better for baby chams if you figure out how to breed the hydei efficiently - if you need lots of flies in a short amount of time go with melanos.

what about some kind of ants or termites, obviously not fire ants but some that couldnt hurt?

How about crickets??????? My first clutch wouldnt touch the flies so I start them off with 1 week old well gutloaded crix:)

I try not to feed too many fruitflies to mine, mostly pinhead crickets. They need a lot of calcium and vitamins as neonates and pinheads are easily gutloaded and dusted. Fruitflies don't seem as nutritious to me. Ants can be aggressive so be careful, I have never tried termites for baby panthers. I have fed termite larvae to my dart frogs and they are very fattening.

Cricket are easier to gutload. Fruit flies don't provide much nutrition as a staple for growing babies.

I had some baby panthers that didnt really like pinheads or fruit flies at first. It was wierd as I never had this problem before. My solution was rice beetle larvae and I just just them in a very shallow cap and they ate them right up. I have never had this problem again and I suppose that rice beetles are even less nutritious that FF or Crix.
