Janet says, "Burrrrr, it got down to 44 degrees last night. I can't wait 'till the sun gets here!"

Kent...do you leave your chams out overnight? If so how do you do that successfully with it going down to 44F? I would love to have that option

There was a kid I talked to at the show that had a jacksonii jacksonii male and was looking for a female.

She is beautiful how old is she? Are they not being imported any longer?

Yep, this is my second winter leaving them outside at night. I do bring them in when the temps don't warm up enough during the day or if it's supposed to get close to freezing overnight.

Ryan, this girl will be 2 years old in March. I've not seen any jacksonii jacksonii come in since early 2007, and then several years before that. I sure wish I'd met the guy with the male because I can't find one anywhere. I'd be perfectly willing to do a breeding loan or something. Out of curiosity, were you convinced he really had a jacksonii and not a xanth? I'm asking because even Mike who sold some of this subspecies 2 years ago said he doesn't know anyone that still has them alive.

Dave, I've spoken to Rob a few times when I first got my Jackson's. He's keeping xanths which are from a higher altitude than the nominate, Nairobi form. I would speculate that they can probably even take lower temps than the lowland form. Also, interesting to note is I've heard the same thing that Rob describes happening with F. oustaleti. Steve Davison once told me about forgetting their old pet, CB male Oustalet's outside on a night that froze. When he got up the next morning the poor guy was on the ground where he'd fallen, stiff and covered in ice crystals from the lawn sprinklers coming on overnight :( After picking him up and grieving for a few minutes the cham twitched a little. Steve said he laid him down under a low wattage bulb to warm up. Once he did, he got up and walked away...perfectly fine.

Wow. She's gotten big! Do you still have her sister?

I don't understand why keepers in warmer climates don't keep their chams outside 24/7 and why it's not recommended more. If it's sunny the next day, most species can tolerate a big temperature drop at night.

Cheers,
t

Although I can't be sure, The same kid asked me the same question at the Anaheim show as well. His description of the colors were right on and he seemed to know what he had. He was looking at the Jacksons at Chads booth and said I have a Jackson but its not like those. He described it and called it a jacksonii jacksonii and new where it came from. He has been looking for awhile.

He mentioned he had him for a couple of years and would like to find a mate for him.

He said he loves the shows so maybe I'll see him in SD at the super show.

Wow, that's a bummer. I sure wish I knew who it was because I would love to breed this girl. Hopefully he does show up at the San Diego show. Bummer :(

Trace, no, unfortunately I don't have her sister any more. They were housed together in a large, well planted cage. They would both always wait in the top corner that received the first sunshine each morning and on one very hot day it seems LaToya chose not to move from there. Janet went down into the foliage and was fine but when I got home in the afternoon LaToya was still clinging to the cage, clearly in bad heat distress. I tried to cool her slowly inside with A/C and misting but she was too far gone and passed soon after a day. :(

That is truly an amazing story, I bet he was too relieved for words!

That's really sad, I wonder why she chose to stay in that position when it was distressing her, that's odd...a very frustrating situation for you

I took Ben(ita) out today. I got a Majestic Palm on CLearance at Lowes for $2..Yes $2.. Was $10 but the guy stopped and said the planter broke (the cheap ones that arent even big enough had split) so he stuck a tag on it for $2!!) I put it up on a speaker in our LR and its about 7 ft tall (on the speaker it goes about 10 feet high).. Took Ben(ita) out and placed her on it. We have a half moon window above our double window that allows you to see the trees outside and she climbed up there and stared.. Thought i would share!!
