Where to place my uv bulb, INSIDE.

Since screen and mesh filter out a portion of uv from the bulbs. How exactly would you go about hanging the light in the terrarium. How do I prevent the cham's from touching/messing and getting possibly burned?

if your setup is about medium sized having your lights around the top outside of the setup should be fine, yes the mesh might catch 20% of the light but a good bit is still going through.
With your basking light be sure that its not to close, Cause I've had a chameleon right after shedding get to close and get burned. MY FAULT. I beat myself up over that all the time. so yea.
most local pet shops and or online shops have temp strips that can be set in there permanently or you can let it sit in for awhile to see how the temps get.
play with your light setup til you and yours are content


some terrariums like mine which is able to collapse down have a clip inside with a velcro spot in the top for that purpose, most do not.

Putting the bulb IN the enclosure is a bad thing for many reasons.
It getting wet, exploding, and shooting glass and phosphorous powder all over your cham being the main one.

A 5.0 UVB light, placed on top, or a couple of inches higher, has been shown to be sufficient.

What type of chameleon and enclosure are you working with here?

thanks for your replies. As I originally planned, I will definitely be putting up the lights how you guys have mentioned. I'm getting two nosy be's from KammerFlage Kreations, and will be housing them in separate medium sized screens cages.

all of us or the great majority put our uvbs on top of the screen and all our chameleons do fine.

Screening ONLY filters out as much UV as it filters out visible light.

So.....

If the screening filters (ie: blocks) out say... 25% of the visisble light....
then it will ONLY be blocking out 25% of the UV light.
Diffenent mesh sized have different amouts of "open space" in them to pass light through.
If you have a real restrictive mesh like the tight weave fiber glass screening, then you would want to consider adding another bulb.

But if light is getting through, then so is UV.
However...
If you are using weak or cheapie UV bulb ... you may not be getting enough.

The true way to tell is to check it with a Solarmeter.

Thanks! That was a very helpful illustration of UV filteration. Luckily, my screens allow much light to go through, so all should be well.
