where should i put my heat source

Hi i haven't got my chameleon yet but i am just setting things up and was wandering do i need to set my heat lamp above my screen cage i heard putting it directly on top of the cage would give thermal burns to the chameleon. Just trying to do my best for Rango ( Thats his name).

This is true. You want it suspended above the cage so it does not get the mesh hott to the touch, yet close enough to provide enough heat to the "basking spot" in the cage. Only want you will know if by testing distance and checking temps
