When to start fruit fly cultures

My eggs will be 5 months Aug. 1st. I have been told veiled take 6-9 months. I have no experience with fruit flys, I have only seen them in stores.. When do I start, what do I do with them if it does take 4 more months..

easiest thing is to find a place that has them... buy your first one already going/established when they hatch -- then make your new one off that one.

otherwise you could make 2-5 cultures before anything even hatches

this is fine if you trust the place that sells them to always have them in stock.
I prefer to keep a culture of my own going at all times, just in case. If you keep it in a cool room, they breed/grow slower so you'll go through fewer cultures over time. Its not like its expensive to culture flies. Plus this will make you a pro at it for when the time comes that you'll need multiple cultures going at all times for your hungry little mouths

this is true~ I know someone with poison dart frogs, so they always have them. If you can't find a place you know will have them, you may want to just culture them
