Whats the difference

Hello everybody, I have been looking at this chameleon breeder for a while now; she sells panther chameleons, but under all the facts about the chameleon, it says 87.5% Ambilobe and 12.5% Ambanja. What does that mean? Could it affect the health of the chameleon? I understand that part of the chameleon is Ambilobe and part Ambanja. Is this just like a mutt where the dog has different parents?

I think is not too much different than a dog being 75% golden retriever and 25%lab. Just a mix of colorations from the two species. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I have no idea what demon has been unleashed. I do know that there are some who frown upon intentionally mixing the locales. If you are getting a mixed locale chameleon for a pet only, I don’t see any problem with that. If you are having any plans of breeding one though, I advise getting a pure locale chameleon and not mixing locales any further. Health should be fine as far as I know.

You have unearthed a demon we thought long gone from this world….

😂 @Beman @JacksJill

Release the kraken.

If you are just interested in a nice pet it won’t make any difference. If you want to be taken seriously as a breeder you should start with pure locale.

The jury is out on the long term ramifications of breeding different locales. They may be different species or only different morphs. We don’t know how fertile or healthy mixed locales will be through multiple generations.

I’ve seen ambilobe and ambanja crosses go a few generations without any obvious complications. Maybe some of the males weren’t interested in breeding but that may not be unique to crosses. I don’t know for certain. I don’t know how other more distant crosses have performed.

It’s a huge debate in the community whether it’s ethical or not. At least this breeder is upfront about the lineage.

I wouldn’t pay the same amount for a cross that is therefore pet quality as I would for a pure local for breeding.

Let the debate rage on.
