Hi im just after a quick bit of advice, ive seen people talk about putting crickets and food in a cup for there cham, i want to get mine away from hand feeding, what do you use and where do you place them, size/material ect

thanks alot guys

i personally find any plastic dish thats at least 4inchs deep will keep most crickets in. its suggested that opaque containers are better so chams can see it when they shoot for prey. i usually hang it about the middle where it can be seen easily. my one guy was picky and only likes a certain cup so you may want to try diff types and colors.

I use a large water jug with screen on the back (for the crickets to climb) and a large part of the front cut out.

on a nother note, why do you want to get away from hand feeding? I guess it can be time consuming if you have a number of chameleons, and part of the reason I have my "cricket jug" is for when I don't have time befor work, and so he has a snack later in the day.

but I would never want to get away from hand feeding, it's one of the coolest parts of chameleon ownership IMO, I hand feed my panther any chance I get, I just wish my jacksons would hand feed as well.

I take my chameleon out of her cage [gasp! yep. I handle my cham], put her on a flat surface, dust a cricket..... and set it free in her range. Best part of my day. I love it. And when she's done eating the crickets, she walks over to me and I pick her up and put her back in her home. She used to not eat at all, so this has been a slow process. I used to have to literally show her a cricket in my hand and wait for her to notice it's legs moving. And she'd only eat one. Now she knocks out 8-10 in a sitting and it's a pretty fast process.

i used to take my brevs out of their tank and put the crickets in a little plastic feeder keeper and stick the opposite end of a fish net for fish tanks and they can climb up and down it to get the crickets my brevs would hand feed sometimes too

I use a water bottle with the top 1/4 cut off in one cage, I covered it with masking tape so my Cham wouldn't try to get the crickets through the container and keep hitting the plastic wall instead. In my other cage I have a crystal light container (the ones that are white but a little see through. I put a little hole in each and attached it with a zip tie to a branch. I picked a branch where the Chams hang out a lot, the containers sit right to the side of the branch so as the Cham walks by they see the bugs. Also, each cage has a lid (came from a large bottle of seasoned salt) with a little wire attached to it that I hang from the end of other branches and I use that for the worms since they don't move around as much as crickets and the Chams seem to notice them more in them. My female will even eat crickets that have been frozen and thawed if I put them in the lid. Also, if a Cham doesn't eat his meal or all of it and leaves a few crickets I stick a little piece of food (like a little piece of mustard green) in the cup for the crickets and leave them in over night. They always get eaten the next day. I have a few little holes in the bottom of the cups so that any water from the mister that happens to go in will drain and not get the crickets wet. Most often the crickets get eaten the same day I stick them in though, the Chams know to go to the cups when hungry and are usually eager to eat as long as I change up the food source once in a while so they aren't bored :)
