I replaced my room lights with red bulbs. It doesnt seem to bother the chams at night and also it sets a nice mood when girls come over.
VERY NICE!
If that was directed at me... I believe I already addressed that point. With all due respect....
After all this back and forth over lights and so on, and not being able to accomidate the animals needs did you ever consider that a chameleon may not be the best pet for you and your life style?
There are several animals that are nocturnal, and that may suit you better.

Malicious dodalah and chameleon baby sitter thanks for your concern for my future chameleon and his well being when living with me. Anyone who cares about my chameleon's wellbeing is a friend of mine.
I would only need the light when walking into my room or out of it. Such as when I'm going to or coming back from the shower. I won't be working in there when he's sleeping.
Also the situation and times I presented are the extremes and would only happen 4-5 times a year @ the most.
If to have a happy chameleon I could never turn a light on while he was sleeping that would be a pittance for me. Once I get my chameleon, to quote cars the movie, I'm gonna be " happier than a tornado in a trailer park!"
So yeah point is all do whatever it takes and I am crazy excited.
well, certainly there are 2 options here that you can choose at the end, Wilfred.
I hope this thread will not turn into a bashing arena (like Philanddeb predicted), since I think this is a great question that can bring up good discussions. I would like to start with the statement that my post is not meant to be flaming in nature...
...My point is why expose our pet to such activity that we might possibly affect his health where we can be the better owner by just working outside the reptile's room or carrying the flash light to move about in that dark room?
Perhaps, after 2 weeks or so of such interruptions, he'll probably will sleep like a log even when we turned on the light.
Now, the question is.. is this what we called adaptation? Not likely.. Adaptation is probably the wrong choice of word.imho, in this case, we simply put our chameleon to a point where he's too tired to wake up during that midnight interruption.
