What if the power goes out?

So since Hurricane Sandy is supposed to like destroy America, I guess my home is in her path. I live in Pittsburgh, PA and was wondering what should I do if the
power goes out for an extended period of time? All of my chameleon's lights will be out, and I'm a new chameleon owner and am kind of scared to even think of a power outrage. One time in the past, a tree fell on a power line and we were out for 3 days.

All in all, if the power goes out, what should I do about lighting/heating?

As long as they dont have eggs and are adults, you should be good for a couple of days around 60f. Mine just sleep through it. I would only drip of dropper water, dont spray them down. Odds are they wont either either (since they are cold). I found it was less stress to just leave them be then to move them to a new house that was worm. Mind you this is for veiled and panthers.

  • wood burning fireplace (or gas bottle fireplace) to heat the house somewhat
  • windows for ambient light
  • if needs be, move chameleons to smaller housing/boxes, use hot water bottles (your hot water tank, if you have one, will stay hot a long while - otherwise boil water on the bbq) or heat packs (as used in shipping)
  • if I lived somewhere it gets really cold, I'd have a generator
  • other options: solar panels, wind generator, electric generating bike, taking chameleons to a vet that has a generator and will board, etc.

If you are concerned about heat, and a small basking bulb (60 watts or so) will help you out, consider a power inverter. They can be had for little money and will hook up to your car either through the cigarette lighter or larger ones can attached directly to the battery. Run an extension cord from the inverter into the house to power the bulbs.

They can be had in any size from 100watts to over 1000watts. You can pick them up at Wal Mart or any other retailer. That being said, may be difficult to find them this late in the game.
