Are they kept in captivity and does any one on the forum keep them? I thought they were a subspecies of the C. Calyptratus?

just about everyone on this forum has started out with a veiled chameleon at some point.
they are all captive bred (for the most part)

is the sub species even recognized anymore? i don't think so but I'm not sure either, its not on this species database

It has been proven that this subspecies is not a subspecies at all, but rather a hybrid between Chamaeleo calyptratus , Veiled chameleon and Chamaeleo arabicus, the Arabian chameleon.

Hes not talking about the veiled chameleon so many of us keep. He is talking about the much rarer sub species of the nominate form. I dont believe they are kept in captivity, at least not in the US. In the book, Chameleons of Africa by Collin Tilbury they describe them and have pics in their natural habitat.

Haven't seen you in a bit! I agree with you I remember reading about that somewhere.

C. calyptratus calcarifer

I believe my male and his sister are the C. calyptratus calcarifer. They normal live on the western slope of Saudi Arabia. They are a true second species of the veiled chameleon.

They are less aggressive and have small casques than the Chamaeleo calyptratus.

You can tell a huge difference in personality and in the casque. I am actually looking for another Chamaeleo calyptratus female.

I prefer these kind of veils because they are calmer, very curious and never hiss or show any signs of aggression towards a human.

Mine love to ride in the car, enjoy being handled by people - strangers.

Very different from the other chameleon.

Chamaeleo calyptratus

I would post a photo of my male but I don't know how to do it. Unless someone wants to tell me? Then you all can decide which one I have! :) Jen
