Whichever you call it, are they edible for chams? I have a bunch in my yard (where NO pesticides are used) and sure would like to make good use of them...

at my house the pill bugs are next to snails/slugs and slugs have tons of parasites its completely your choice to feed wc

you can inspect the pill bugs rinse em off i started my own culture i had tons of babies but the ants ruined it:( they infested my colony some people on here feed alot of wc things just remember there could be a $500.00 vet bill thats why i wouldnt bother risking it:)

Do not feed WC pillbugs/woodlice. They accumulate heavy metals. Only use CB pillbugs. Collect some from outside and start a breeding colony.

OK, I am SO starting an isopod colony tomorrow. One thing I didn't see in any of the literature, though, is how long do I need to let them reproduce before they're safe to feed?

we have two. and you can tell the females bc of their pouch. the bigger and more yellow it is the more pregnant they are. and they have babies really fast. i feed the wild caught ones as well as the new born ones but i kept and fed them for about a week just to be on the safe side that all pesticides were gone

First generation was good enough for me. After I had lots of babies, I removed all of the wc adults/parents. As soon as the babies were big enough to feed off, I did so (keeping half to mature as new breeders). Each spring I capture a few new wild adults already carrying young the next spring, and add those young to my colony.

best place to find them in my experience is old tree trunks. we have a tree stump down the road that houses millions of these buggers

Here's a link to one of my threads about female woodlice - the pics show a female's brood pouch. :D https://www.chameleonforums.com/female-woodlouse-pics-84081/ And here is my thread with baby woodlouse photos! They are so tiny! https://www.chameleonforums.com/baby-woodlice-84924/

None of the pics would show up for me. :( But I am so glad I'm not the only one that's so excited about these little critters! LOL

I was lying in bed this morning minding my own business, when all of a sudden there's a roly poly walking on the sheet right next to my face! They fall into my bathtub and get stuck sometimes, but this is the first I've seen one in the rest of the house. When I annouced yesterday to anyone who would listen that I'm starting a breeding colony, I figured I'd have to go out and catch them. I didn't think I'd get any volunteers!!! :D

My Dad thinks it's highly amusing! He told me I am strange, lol! :D I love collecting them from Mum and Dad's garden! In fact I will be hunting for more tomorrow as a lot of my colony has died. Mum holds the rocks up while I frantically grab as many as I can without squishing them! I often wonder what the neighbours think! :D

Haha! I'm the resident animal quack in my neighborhood, so I doubt anything I do surprises them! Last fall I fostered a pot bellied pig for a few weeks til he got adopted, and one evening while I was gone he got out of the fence and was apparently running the neighborhood. When I got home, he was in the wrong section of the yard, and one neighbor came over and said, "He was out running around. We weren't sure where he came from but figured he probably belonged here, so we put him back in your yard." LOL!!! So seeing me outside scraping bugs off the bottom of rocks will surprise no one! ;)
