wc meller saved

i found a wc meller at a reptile store and decided to get it and was told that its been to the vet and cleaned up but i want to take it myself but have to save up. im having issues loading photos but if u email me i will send probly more then then u want but please help i just want to keep it happy. yesterday it ate 5 crickets out of my hand a few from its dish and has been drinking but never leaves a few branches high in its cage. and i have been reading the meller discovery site daily.

Im sure youve read this on Melleri Discovery. But those guys need alot of drinking oppurtunities daily. So mist mist mist mist and mist some more. Is this an adult or a sub adult? The adults can be hard to acclimate esp for a first timer. I wouldnt worry about a fecal for now. Try to get him/her acclimatted and hydrated then make an appt for a week or two down the road. Do you know how long its been in the states? If its a long term captive then you may have an easier time getting over the first 6 month hump. At least in my exp with wc's if you can get them past that first six months in captivity they will often be just as hardy as any cb. Its all in the acclimation stage and how bad they were debilitated during importation. Good luck, they are a beautiful species to work with.....

thank you texas panther man . he is about 8 in vent to snout and 16 in snout to tail tip he is sprayed 4 or more times a day depending on heat i have seen it drink it eaten a few crickets but havent seen any thing yet . i have a cb jouvi in a smaller cage living well outside so im hopeing this big guy will to i can email u photos . some times it looks very happy and other times it has sum stress spots. other then that very aware checking out every thing from high in the cage. i measured it and put it in a lower part of its cage and it hasent gone back to the top but also has nice stress free color .

Sure send em over to [email protected] I always love checking out cham pics. You must live in So Cal or somewhere relatively cool. Its nice when you can put them outside for nat uvb. Thats really the best medicine there is for them. My poor crew hasnt had an extended stay outside since the string of 100 deg days here in Houston. We're cooking down here! Im just praying we'll see some relief so I can get my collection outside again.....

I wouldn't trust anything the store said unless you have overwhelming proof of their claims. One "shotgun" Panacur treatment without any vet check of specific parasites it MIGHT be carrying is only marginally better than nothing. Especially as melleri often have heavy loads of microfilarial worms that these meds don't get rid of.

Just be prepared...your cham might do fine, but might go downhill after a few months, stop eating and refuse to thrive. It happens so often.

BTW, and IMHO, if you paid for the cham it wasn't really "saved". You rewarded the store for selling a wc animal and they'll most likely do it again. It is much more humane to support a responsible breeder.

i totally agree on not helping the store and getting from a responsible breeder but i havent found one for sale for a bit and i didnt buy the cham i had store credit from a previous transaction.

Like Texas Panther man said mist mist mist, but its not only how often you mist its how long you mist. Melleri typically drink from the mist it's rare to see them drink drops from the leaves. It takes time to get these guys drinking so I mist my guys 20-25 minutes in the am 15-20 minutes in the afternoon and 20-25minutes in the evening and still offer dippers during the day. Being you dont know much history on this guy you may want to must him more to assure proper hydration while he acclimates.
Proper cage space and privacy makes acclimating a heck of alot smoother in my experience.

I agree that they need plenty of water and privacy and if you are able to I suggest free-ranging. They like that freedom.

i have posted photos of a cage on here you can find it on my post history and it is the one this meller is not climbing the cage walls or on the floor > and yes long showers . is it ok for panthers and jacksons to be watered as much as the meller? and thanks for the support.
