Hello everyone I am wondering what is the best way to get rid of chlorine and other bad things from your watter to put in a mister or big dripper and annything that requires water for a chameleon. I do t know if there are certain filters or if reptisafe is still a good option.

I just had to do a bit of a search for this myself. I've been trying to think of a better way than buying 5g jugs of water. And apparently there are reverse osmosis hook-ups for taps. @MissSkittles can I ask how long you've used this and is it worth it? How long does one unit last?

I make my own reverse osmosis water with one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DOG63OY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which very easily hooks up to my kitchen sink. Using Mist Kings, I need to avoid things that would clog them up. Before getting a mist king though, I did use ReptiSafe and would also let the water sit to gas off.

That is just an adapter to connect the RO system to the water faucet. It has no filtration properties at all. I’ve been using RO for about 5 years now and it’s pretty simple…just time consuming when you have to make about 20+ gallons at once. I did replace my first one, which did 50g/day with one that does 100g/day and it’s a huge time saver. You don’t have to use RO water. Some use regular drinking water filters, like Brita, Pur, Zero Water, etc. The pitchers seem like they would be pretty convenient.

To be honest I use the water from my faucet. However, it's important to realize that everyone's faucet water is NOT created equal. The water in my area is fine. We put a filter on it, but we used it without it just fine. The only reason it has a filter now is because we had a leak that a friend fixed and he put a new 'system' in place for us which included a filter. We had no reason to add a filter, otherwise.

If your water is questionable, you could always get it tested. In my last home I used the water from the faucet there too, but we had well water that I personally kept up with, just with normal salt meant for salt tank. Nothing special, or different. And it was totally fine. Now we have city water, but it's totally fine. We've been here since October 2024, and Spike has been doing great.

IDK about any certain filters, but you could always add a filter if you feel the need to do so. If you notice signs of having high iron or something in your water, then definitely treat it appropriately, as it can at least mess up your equipment for misting/fogging.

With that being said, our last home DID have high iron, and we still did NOT have issues. And as long as I kept up with the salt, we usually weren't seeing too many signs of iron.

I don’t know…never did a study on it. All I can say is that I didn’t find any problems using my (Ontario Canadian) water for them when it was left out overnight like that. Using this as just one example…my veiled females almost always lived to be 6 or 7 years old..so I think I would have seen issues with them if the water was a problem. I wish I could provide you with a study that would prove it…but I don’t know of any such studies.

I used to do the same thing with my veiled chameleon.he passed away but he also had a lot of other problems so that's why I am curious it never seemed like anny thing was wrong with it. Thank you

If you’re using a misting system, most do better with RO water. You won’t have the mineral build up that clogs the nozzles. I would get a good one that’s easy to maintain. The cheap ones tend to be more expensive in the long run. Something like this:

This is what I use. Or atleast similar. Mine a mix of pieces from BRS. But I use it for my reef tank too so I have a 3 stage DI unit on it as well.

Here is my set up and one of my misting buckets. In the pick I’m running rodi for the reef tank. But there is a second output just after the RO filter part that I use for the the reptiles.

Please excuse any mess you might see, my classroom is in summer chaos mode. Building shelves in my closet to make storage more organized but makes the classroom a mess.

However if you are not able to hook one up which was the issue I ran into because I rented so the landlord would not allow it, I used the Zero water filter system. Can be tedious though and the filter must be changed out monthly or it will smell like fish. With one chameleon this method was doable for me. However when I had more I bought RO water from my local pet store as they used it for their tanks. Just took in jugs for them to fill up.

Oh they definitely do but it is a great option for those that are not able to hook up an RO system.

Plus if you ever have a chance to start a reef tank, you just need to get a DI unit to add on to the RO

Main tank and temporary quarantine tank for incoming corals.

I’m starting up a reefing club for the middle school so I will have another shallower tank for coral grow-out.

Does it need to be directly hooked into a pipe, or can someone with almost 0 DIY knowledge put this together? I'm trying to wrap my mind around it. Is it a separate bucket filled with water to-be-processed, which feeds through the processor, and then to the mistking? Or do you transfer the clean water by hand? The mind boggles seeing all those cords lol Looks like a bomb you have to defuse.
