Veiled Egg Laying - Issues

Hi Everyone (Again) -

So, I just got home and Cammie my female Veiled has been trying for the last 3 days to lay her eggs.... I have completely left her alone, and closed off her cage - misting quite a bit and other than that nothing else...

The problem is - she digs and digs a wonderful hole is made - then she goes back up top - looks like to rest - then goes back down and starts digging a different hole all together - it's like she isn't satisfied with the 1st one she made - at this point - her eggs are totally buldging out of her belly and she is so fat!

This isn't her first clutch with us - she is about 1.5 years old....

Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

Anyone? She is just walking along in her bin with a belly that is too big, her eggs look like theyre going to break through the skin.... help please?

If you get her to the vet in time a good chameleon vet can give oxytocin to induce egg laying before she becomes egg bound. Several injections of oxytocin over several days might be needed. If she still doesn’t lay the eggs surgery is the only other alternative. Surgery is very risky but if the injections don't work it may be your only choice,

Glena. There might not be anyone on right now who knows how to answer your question the best. I know the veiled expert is not online right now but she does check in almost daily. Here is the link to her profile. You could try to PM her. Her name is Jann

Good luck! I hope it all turns out well for you and your girl. :D

Were at the vet now.... Vet says not egg bound yet, they're going to rehydrate her, give her some liquid calcium and see how it goes.... thank you guys for urging me to get her into the vet ASAP.

Good luck with your laying. I'm a small time breeder and when my girls do that I remove the bin and give her a different one with different sand. I have one girl that likes her sand pretty wet and prefers my round bin where the other ladies like the rectangle bins. Go figure. Anyway, it works for me and my female. She hops right in and digs and lays right away in the round bin with the wetter sand.

Let's hope she lays soon.

Sounds like she was still working on digging a satisfactory hole before laying her eggs. Usually you don't have to worry about them as long as they are still continuing to dig...its when they stop digging and still haven't laid the eggs that they are in trouble.

That'a a good idea. I know my female veiled Camille does not like a regular size laying bin and I have to use a giant trash can for her. You can see pictures of it in my laying bin blog here: https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/jannb/345-egg-laying-laying-bin.html

Great advice guys - I'm going to set up a different bin when I get home today - thanks for responding Jannb - I've been hoping you would! :)

Do you think 4 days is too long for her to be digging without making a satisfactory hole?

We did go to the vet, she gave her a "shot" of liquid calcium - re-hydrated her, and sent her home with some more liquid calcium - also with a can of cat food! Told me to add a little water to it and give her .5ml of it in a syringe... I've never heard of that before - anyone else?

Thanks everyone!
