Veiled Chameleon eye problem

Hello, my 2-3 month old veiled chameleon seems to have some sort of irritation with his eye.

He closes one or both eyes and can open them or keeps one open.

He seems to be in good health regular colour he gets his vitamins once a week and calcium 3 times a week, his poop is white urinate and poop dark brown.

Mists 3 times a day bottled water, I'm yet to see him shed he has been eating and drinking he sleeps/rests a lot and I have flushed his eyes with saline solution and tried shower misting him which he hated.

Can anyone advise as I love this little guy and hate to see him unwell.

Your Chameleon - veiled, Male, 2-3 months old.

How long has it been in your care? 2-3 weeks

Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? 2 times a week

Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? Locust crickets rare wax worm

What amount? 5 a day locust/cricket

How are you gut-loading your feeders?

Supplements - What brand andtype of calcium and vitaminproducts are you dusting yourfeeders with and what is the schedule? HabiStat vitamins Habistat natural calcium. Vitamins once a week calcium 3 times a week

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? 1-2 mins and I must with bottled water.

Do you see your chameleon drinking? Yes

Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? White urinate, and dark brown poop and no


History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you. None to note he's young not had him long.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? Medium come reptibreez from the chameleon kit not sure on dimensions but it's labelled medium


Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? 15watt Arcadia tube UVB+UVA, 60watt prorep basking and he has a red night light for cold nights.

What is your daily lighting schedule? 12 on 12off

Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? 74F coolest area 80F warmest basking 80-85F



How do you measure these temps? Digital temp probe

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? It's a Analog one it says humid

How are you creating and maintaining these levels? A dripper and misting

What do you use to measure humidity? Analog hydrometer

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? A mixed ficus plant

Placement - Where is your cage located? In the corner of my room. (Will attach pictures)

Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? Not to far from the window that is left open for ventilation no high traffic I live alone.

At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? Will attach pics.

Location - Where are you geographically located? London, Eltham, UK

Ooo gut loading with lettuce FYI that isn't my foot I'm still in training and he freaks out of I put my hand in the cage near or under him but reacts differently to my sock (clean)

Also a note, when I got him out for some handling time and pictures he started rubbing his eye on my finger

First I would say that his eyes don't look great and I would suggest getting him to a vet. Where did you get him from? I know you lost your last one and that the pet store you got him from had a lot to do with that.

Second there are a few things I see that could use a little tweak.

Lettuce for a gut load isn't great. I would add good leafy greens like mustard leaves, kale, collard greens, apples, etc.

Dust your feeders daily with the plain calcium. Does your multi vitamin have D3? If not you need to also get a calcium with D3 and dust 2x a month with that. As well as the multi vitamin should be 2x a month also.

Stop using the red light at night. A temp drop at night is good for them. If you are sleeping in the same room then temps should not be dropping low enough to need a heat source at night for him unless it gets below 60. If it does then a ceramic bulb that puts off no light is what you need. Eye issues can come from a light at night too. They need the dark to sleep and set their internal clock by as well as regulate their hormones. Any light, even a red one will disrupt their sleep.

Also try misting a bit more. Add a few shorter mists and keep the longer ones too. Longer misting 3 minutes and longer give them the chance the clean out their eyes of any debris they might pick up from the air.

I'm not familiar with the Habistat brand but I do see in the list of ingredients of the Repton that there is D3. The Repti Calcium or the natural calcium works for daily dusting. The Repton use 2x a month. No need to get anything else then since the Repton has the D3 in it.

Hmm not using a compact UVB by chance? My guy had the exact looking eye issue when I used the compact.

Also the deep dome at the top. I got it in my reptibreeze kit. I've read that even using a deep dome can concentrate the light into one point and burn their eyes. I still use one but I only use the daylight bulbs to keep a blue tint to it.

Nah I was warned about the compact UVB I keep it spare for emergency but I use an Arcadia tube UVB+UVA

Ummm I would get whatever you have in the bottom of the cage out that could be ingested

I can see a tiny bruises in that closed eye,u will need to bring the cham to the vet and get some type of the eye drops for treatment.

Thank you guys for all your help ! I'm gonna take him to the vet as soon as payday come not long tomorrow I think, and with regards to the bark don't worry I thought about that it's too big for him to eat by accident and plus he never come down there lol far as he will go is mid section but I monitor it all the time

But in the mean time I flush his eyes with saline solution to keep it clean once a day until I can seek him medical attention

I'm pretty sure I have managed to whittle down three causes of his eye problems, 1 Crickets bit his eye 2 Ficus Sap, 3 scratched his eye any input on these would be awesome guys

Just a note to everyone in here, there was no illness it would seem the eye irritation was cause by his first shed I come home from work today to see him looking at me with shedded skin all over his face haha !
