Veggie Time

My older boy is chomping down on his ficus tree. I think he does it more for tree trimming. He only eats what gets in his way. haha

My Veileds occasionally eat leaves but I've recently been giving them little pieces of seedless grapes and strawberries attached to the branches in their enclosures. Most seem to like them a lot.

Dyesub Dave. :D

I just put more grape pieces in today! Man they love them. Three out of my four veileds have them gone in about 5-10 minutes. They try to stick their tongues to them but if that doesn't work they go over to the twig they're stuck on and pull them right off. The one veiled that's not eating them is still on a food strike. The only thing that wants to eat are silkies and hornworms!! Lil' Bugger!!

I have given my veileds dandelion greens, endive, escarole, romaine lettuce, sweet red pepper, carrot, squash, zucchini, sweet potato, apple, pear, melon, berries and more....some eat a lot of it and some don't.

How do you introduce veggies and fruits to your veileds? Will they differentiate or identify them as something different and try and eat it?

Hey Kinyonga,

How do you serve some of those? Do you always chop them up small in a dish or something? Like I was trying to figure out how you would serve carrots? Do you cook them first cuz they're pretty hard? Maybe just carrot shavings with the peeler? And small strips or cubes of red pepper?

And I have no idea what endive and escarole are!! LOL

Red pepper, apple, pear, melon can be cut into thin wedges and impaled on branches or diced up and put in the dish. I don't cook any of them but I have heard that if sweet potato is slightly cooked (blanched) it is better vitamin-wise for them.

You said..."And I have no idea what endive and escarole are!! LOL"...there are several kinds of each....but this is what the ones I use look like...

I take a thin wedge of one and when the chameleon is drinking or eating I stick the end between its teeth then impale the rest of the piece on the branch. They seem to learn quite quickly that these things are good to eat. They seem to be attracted to the reds and orange colors but they also seem to like to eat the greens too. The "salad" can also be introduced by putting chopped up greens, etc. in a dish and letting some crickets loose in the dish. The chameleon will often shoot at the cricket and end up with some "salad" in its mouth too...so this teaches it that the "salad" is good to eat.

It always amazes me when a chameleon will pass up a cricket to eat the greens, etc.!

yea mine does the same thing. if a leaf is in his way he wont go around he will just eat it.

i just lay pieces of greens and stuff on some of his perches and he either has to eat them or go over them and he usually eats them. i seen him two days ago trying to eat a huge slice of greens and when me and my girlfriend seen him and he seen us he decided to take smaller bites. it was funy to see him with the huge leaf haning out his mouth.

hey i got a question:
as far as feeding collard greens to cham..
should i include the stem too? or just the leaves part..
