From what I have read. The Exo Terra Repti Glo are on par with the ReptiSun as far as amount of UVB emmited. The real difference between the two is that the ReptiSUN is supposed to produce proper amounts of UVB a few months longer than the ReptiGLO.
Wattage, I am not sure about. I don't think they make numerous bulbs in the same style of bulbs that only vary in wattage.

I'm pretty sure you want to stick with the linear bulb. The coil bulbs have a bad reputation for causing eye issues with chams.

Only some older coils are an issue. The advice to stick to the linear is "the known safe option"....

Yeah I am pretty sure it will be fine. If I remember correctly you will want to make sure the UVB bulb is 12" ish from his basking spot for max exposure.

I think you are referring to a safe distance. It varies between bulbs.

For a normal sized cage made of window screen (the cages sold at LLL) the 5.0 Zoo Med ReptiSun will do the job. BUT I highly recomend you line the back of your light fixture with aluminum foil to help increase the lamps output into the cage. It is also a good idea that the chams main basking area be about 6-8" from the UVB lamp. It helps to angle the heat lamp at a slight angle so the light comes at the animal from it's side rather than straight down.

chameleons need their skin to be warm in order to process the calcium in their diet. This is why basking lamps need to be placed near UVB light sources.

could somebody please clarify this? i use reptiGLO because only a few places sell reptiSUN and are over 55$ a bulb! i've only found 48'' bulbs too, which is fine because thats what i use, but still. reptiGLO's here are around 30$ as opposed to over 60$.

if someone could please varify this, because i do not plan on switching brands of bulbs and i always replace my lamps every 5 months.

The llinear tube is what you want to use. the CFL lamps produce very high (unsafe) levels of UVB up close. If the animal were to be too close to the lamp it would be overexposed. Linear tubes are the way to go.

Wattage in linear tubes doesn't really work like normal household tungsten filament lamps. You don't buy an 18" in different wattage like you would a screw in lamp. The lighting fixtures for linear lamps are all built on a standard. an 18" T8 lamp fixture will be 15w, so all of the lamps are built to operate at 15w of power. This insures that there is little confusion and that the right lamp is matched with the right ballast.

What you do need to keep in mind is the size of the lamps diameter. T8 is one inch or 8/8th of an inch. and a T12 fixture is 1.5" or 12/8th of an inch. the two different lamps will have different wattages even though the length is the same.
