i currently have a slightly used zoo med 10.0 uvb coiled bulb and im getting a 48x24x24 cage which ill be putting a baby veiled in. my question is can i use the 10.0 in this cage for him for several months? should i upgrade to a 5.0 bulb that is long, not coiled?

Just about everybody on here will tell you to avoid the CFL's. I the source of the light is concentrated from the coil and this can bother a chams eyes. I strongly recommend you just go with a linear fixture and the Reptisun 5.0 is widely considered one of the best for chams. I personally got a 24" T5HO fixture with my 24x24x48 that came with a reptisun 5.0 as well.

Are you referring to those tubes that can dim?? I way thinking of getting that for my Cham. Since it has more of a radius of light. Sane with the basking as well

okay.. i asked a question similar to this when i first got on here and was told the coil would be alright to start with. i was trying to get a multitude of opinions by starting this thread about my new enclosure and my second chameleon.
i will look into the linear fixture and bulbs. thank you.

well here i am posting links to the chameleon care resources all the time and when i have a question i dont think to go there and the answer is there!!! silly me... i found my answer there... i feel like a dumb dumb...

I'm pretty sure the ones current to date are safe. I remember it being a manufacturing issue with one of the earlier models, a couple years ago, which definitely did cause eye problems. (I ended up with blind anoles!) However, the new ones, as supposed to, have not caused me problems.

I believe it is an inherent problem of all CFL's. I recall reading a thread where a guy used normal household cfls for the plants at it made his chams squint because it was too bright. But yes, there was a manufacturing problem like you mentioned when they were actually dangerous because they were producing extraterrestrial UV wavelengths that were burning and blinding animals. However even since they still are too bright for some chams.

Hi ReptileLove18,

Currently on the market, the fluorescent bulbs that generate the most UV and broadcast it out over the widest area are HO t5 bulbs.

However, keep in mind that they can create too strong of UV zones close to the bulb.

I do have a question about your cage.

Is is a 24 long x 24 wide x 48 TALL cage ...

or is it a 48" Long by 24 wide x 24" tall cage?

I was going to assume it was 48" tall and vertically oriented like most cham set-ups...

but it is best to not assume. ;)

Thanks!
Todd

Hi,

Those are the bulbs i was looking into! :)

My cage is 4 feet tall, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet deep.

How far away is it recommended to have the bulb away from the top of the screen?

Thank you ahead of time!!

Since the Cham will mostly stay in the top 1/3 of the cage, I think you would be fine using a ho t5 Arcadia 6% bulb and simply setting the light on the screen top.

They have plenty of kick for a setup like that.

Thank you!

Todd
