UVB, Daylight, Screen Issues.

So I have a few questions that I can't seem to find out about anywhere.

I have a 5"(nose to tail tip) Veiled Baby Cham.

I have a Repti Glo (PT2186) Compact UVB 5.0 13 watt about 4 inches from the screen top/10 inches from basking spot and I am wondering if the screen from the cage is filtering the UVB light out. I am concerned about putting the UVB bulb up next to the cage screen as I am paranoid about the whole Eye blindness/squinting issues that I have read about.

Also, If I were to leave the cage outside for a little with a shaded spot would the screen still be filtering out the UVB rays, or am I going to have to actually remove him from the cage to get true direct sunlight (place him on top of cage with a shelter and supervise him).

I've only had him for about 3 days and he's still eating as being active and having his eyes open.

Any help to clear the matter of the screen mesh would be helpful.

I currently have a screen mesh reptibreeze. I put my repti sun 5.0 on top of it, and he shows no signs of getting bothered by it. Its not really strong enough. If you had a 10.0, that would be a different story. As for it blocking out uvb rays, I have heard from someone that it blocks out some. There are also plenty of people here that mesh enclosures, who don't have any issues. (Me included, but my little guy just got here a week ago)

However, true sunlight is ALWAYS better for your cham. Every morning after my little guy eats, I take him out for about 30 minutes to an hour to get real sun.

Real sun is the best thing for any reptile in captivity, I take my Veiled out almost everyday directly after feeding time and let him roam a few of the trees i have in the backyard for him. I also keep a UVB 5.0 on his cage sitting on the mesh, and have never had issues. I have heard that mesh does block out some natural sunlight while outside, but thats down the grapevine and i never have him caged outside.

I rest my linear uvb bulb right on top of most of my cages! You said that you have a compact uvb, if thats true you should try and get a linear, like a reptisun 5.0. The compacts don't work as well and have been known to cause issues. As brooklynE stated, the real sun is by far the best! Try and get him out there as much as you can! This is why, even with uvb bulbs, we still need to give our chams monthly doses of d3. Good luck
