Uv lights good or bad

I read somewhere in this forum that the curly uv lights can damage a Chameleons eyes. I have one of those curly exo terra lights. Looking for answers. This is urgent I want the best for my baby and really need to know if I need to replace it. Thank you in advance for your help

I believe that problem has been fixed. If you want the best I would get florescent UVB they have a lot more output.

They had a problem throwing off uvc that harmed their eyes but they fixed it I use florescent rather not chance it I use 6 % Arcadia for babies and on 36 in and taller cages I use 12 % I like them a lot

Even if they fixed it (yes they fixed it over 7 years ago), the curly ones have very little light hitting the cham. Think about it, what percentage of the light is directly hitting the cham, vs just bouncing off the coils. You are much better off getting a tube light with a chrome reflector.

As Kboz stated, pick your power based oh height of cage. If your little darling is only in a 18" tall enclosure, odds are roam up/down 6" (unless they crawl on the bottom or hang on the screen top directly under the bulb) so a high power 12% is not recommended. On the other hand a 12% hardly puts out anything at 3ft so it would work great in a 4-5ft cage.

Thanks for explaining I was browsing thru here the other day and someone advice a new member about the curly light, so naturally I panicked I am glad is fixed. However I will be lookin into the Arcadia. Know that I really value your opinions you guys are great!

(like how dense your plants are, the distance of perches down from lights etc.)

And can make some suggestions and help pic a good light.

I tell folks -
I first started using UV over reptiles (actually tortoises were my first herps that I used UV over) starting in about 1978.

Back then, the ONLY thing available were the mercury tanning bulbs made for PEOPLE... like GE's Time-A- Tan bulbs.
And few hobbyists got it or could work with it.
Allot of it was done in a few pioneering zoos.
And no such thing as UV meters--
ONLY YOUR OWN SKIN to test on for time vs. sun burning tests, etc.
So you had to figure things out from scratch and be VERY careful.

ahhh... those were the days.
