Hi all im going to be upgrading my Panther cage possibly to a 2x2x4 screen cage,

Does it matter if the uv light does not go from end to end and is a little short? as i may use the old starter which can only go up to a certain size bulb?

On my Veileds encloser it goes end to end if not a little tiny bit bigger, buts its placed diagnonal anyway.

Thanks

With most UVB lights (tube-shaped) the UVB output is weaker at the ends.

You will want to replace your bulbs every 6 months or so.

What size bulb did you have in mind?

Hi the bulb is 16 inches so will be a little short and not span the the width at the top is this too small? does it have to be the total width of the cage?

thanks

16"? Maybe 15" or 18"? If the tube is 18" long, you should be OK as long as you lpace it close to the basking spot. This might be a good time to upgrade your lighting. I would look into a dual lamp fixture. You can then place the UVB and a 6500K lamp side by side to provide more light for the chameleon and more light for the plants. the 6500K lamp will help keep the plants alive and growing.

What type of UVB lamp will you being buying? If your basking branch is more than 8-10" from the top of the cage you might want to consider a 10.0. If using a 5.0, at the very least be sure to put aluminum foil behind the lamp to help reflect the light down into the cage. Foil can improve UVB output into the cage almost 100%.

Hi there i will upgrade the lights i think and just keep my old starter, i wll be getting a 10 with a reflector jacked up of the mesh a few inches, i am looking into a dual fixture, so would i be best off going for a tube that can spanthe width of the cage end to end? rather than a few inches to short like my veileds ones? thanks

Spanning the whole cage would be best since it will provide more light. It will also give the cham more of a change of getting UVB light.
