URI treatment length?

Unfortunately, my one Panther who seems very susceptible to the weather changes stopped eating and I noticed he keeps his head up. I saw him opening his mouth to breath and there were the bubbles. This is the second time in 3 months he's gotten an URI. The weather here has been crazy. Near 100º one week and the next I'm using the heater. He started sneezing a few days ago and I was hoping he could overcome it himself.

Last time I had him on it for 10 days. Afterwards he was fine and ate normally. Is 10 days about right? Or is there a smaller period of time for URI?

as far as URI treatment goes, it can go all the way to a month depending on severity.
How is it that you are using a heater at night? I live in LA, and i have never felt the need to use a heater for my cham. If the temp goes above 100 F, then you can turn on AC. But, make sure you put a humidifier inside the room since AC often robs humidity.

The heater wasn't for them. It was for me! :D

I was only slightly exaggerating. I just used it once to take the chill off the place. Our guys are free range so they decide how hot or not they want it when they're inside by sitting under the PowerSun at the top of their tree.

We live in Santa Monica and don't use any air con. We only need it once a year. If you live here you know the fog can roll in and make it cold here while just a few miles away in Westwood it will be sunny and hot. I monitor humidity and it ranges from 55-65. I keep their trees misted so I don't think that is an issue. I could be wrong.

This guy loves to be hot and was constantly brown until he hit 1 year and now is showing his colors. He's happy to let himself get up to 100º or more before he moves away from the sun if he's outside and its hot or inside with the bulb.

Do you think he might not have gotten over it completely last time? He seemed fine after 10 days.

Another question is dosage. I have Baytril that's 25mg/ml The vet insists I go no higher than .03 While all the info out there says closer to .06 The animal weight 175 grams. I don't want to go too low or too high.

There's actually a conflict. Dr. Greek calculates it higher than the other vet whom I like a lot and also wrote sections of the big reference herp parasite reference book. I'm kind of torn.

vetdebbie. I'm a little confused. Is that formula based on a suspension of Baytril that is 25mg/ml ?

Howdy Gary,

So a low-end of dosage at 5mg/kg is reasonable. With a Vet's recommendation, you can go as high as 10mg/kg (10mg of Baytril per 1000g of chameleon weight).

Your chameleon weighs 175 grams

5mg x 175g/1000g = 0.88 mg (of actual Baytril [Enrofloxacin])

So a 175g chameleon would get 0.88mg of Baytril.

Your Baytril is 25mg/ml in strength. (There is 25mg of Baytril in every ml of liquid Baytril preparation.)

So you need 0.88mg/25mg/ml which is 0.035ml (round off to 0.04ml) of your strength Baytril if my math is right :).

If 10 days isn't taking care of the problem, check with your vet about extending treatment. This would be reasonable so long as the treatment itself isn't making him worse in other ways :(.

He's on day 3 of Baytril (.06 first day - .04 each day after that). He opens his mouth to breath a lot. I don't see any bubbles now but I heard him wheezing when I placed him back under his light. Fog was about to roll in and I brought him inside. I monitored his temp constantly outside and he was always in the 80's.

How long does it take Baytril to start having positive reversing effects?
