Unusual behavior #2

I am a new cham owner and i dont think my cham is acting right. I had him for about a week now and at first he was in a 20 gallon glass tank for 3 days. He was doing good in there, he was eatting about 10 small crickets a day, drinking normally, his pee was white and he was very active. I heard glass wasnt good to keep a cham in so i built him a screen enclosure cage. I put him in his new cage 2 days ago and ever since then he hasnt been eatting anything, i think he is becoming dehydrated also because his pee looks a little white + yellow. Is this just from stress or is this normal?

Ive heard its normal - my cham did this for 3 days, when i moved her to this new enclosure, ive heard its normal, cause there adapting? Anyways, my cham got over it - i wouldnt stress over it that much.. :D

Whats the dimensions of your screen enclosure?

Edit : what type chameleon do you have?

Dave, It will take a few days for him to adjust to his new surrounding.. Just make sure you mist the cage often and long to give him water. You should trigger his thirst about 1 min into the mist. Do mist him directly. I find that Leo prefers to lick the back wall and the vine in front of it so I focus on that first and once thats fully saturated, I move and do the rest for humidity.. I walk away and in about 30 seconds, hes over licking. I do this about 3-4 times a day.

Welcome to the forum and to the wonderful world of chams :)

Have you got live plants in the cage yet?

Also is it still situated on the floor? Chams feel safe when they are high up so if its still on the ground put the cage somewhere thats low traffic and higher.

Can you answer the questions below and post a recent picture of what the cage set up looks like now? A photo is worth a thousand words of what is good and what could be changed to make your chams home a bit better. Also the below questionaire can also help in making sure everything is correct :)

Cage Info:

* Cage Type - Describe your cage construction (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
* Lighting - What brand, model, and type of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
* Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
* Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
* Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
* Location - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?

Chameleon Info:

* Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
* Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
* Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
* Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
* Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
* Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
* History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
* Current Problem - The current problem that you are concerned about.

I'm glad its normal. The whole time i have had my cham i have not once saw it drink anything but i have watched it eat tons of crickets.

Dave, please tell me that you have some plants in the cage for your chameleon... preferably live ones. There's nothing in there for him to hide in or drink from. I know you said that you don't have everything in the cage, so I'm just making sure.

Also, I can't tell what's on the bottom of your cage. Is that sand? Or just a white piece of wood? If it's sand, you don't need that and you'll want to remove it.

I love your cage though, it looks great!

Thats Def sand.. Wow.. Chams are tropical, not desert..
NO SUBSTRATE NEEDED. You can use paper towels for easier cleaning if you like. I use a black garbage bag to help with water dripping. YOU NEED PLANTS. They help with humidity and let the cham feel secure in hiding like its a natural home.. I dont know anyone who would take a chameleon into the desert... We all learn somewhere, but please, look through the FOrums, under Enclosures and see what others are doing.
