Ummmm.....Wut

Hey all. So the strangest thing happened this morning. My mom was checking on Zoey and suddenly made the comment that her urates looked "white, but awfully round". I had a look and it was a tiny little egg!!!!!

She is between 6 and 8 months. I was under the impression, from what the vet said, that she was too small to be able to lay. Now I am a little worried. Could she have more? Why didn't it show on the x-ray?

Zoey is also making a little 'pffft' noise when she takes a deep breath. I have some play sand and laying bin for her, but I am nervous about putting it in the recovery tank. She goes in either tomorrow or Friday. Whichever day that she poops to make sure that the Coccidia is cleared up. (I know that may of you have been upset that I have not put her on Ponazuril)

I am going to call the vet as soon as they open and see what they say about it. I am sure that Dr. Shairella is gonna be confused and surprised.

Any thoughts about this? What to do? This is a good sign that she is strong enough to push it out and that she is recovering well.

Here is Zoey from last week and her infirtle egg from this morning.

I think there is a good possibility she is gravid. When did the vet xray her?

Make sure she has a laying bin inside her enclosure.

Also has she always had those bow shaped legs? Does anyone else see it as well, or am I seeing things?

What plants do you have in the cage?

are they filled with the white pearls of fertilizer?

Because that thing doesn't look like quite like an egg.

Also, if she has coccidia, why is she not on medications for it?!?

(youre right, that does make me a bit angry, seeing as coccidia cant be cleared without meds, and its a B***h to get rid of)

And if it is indeed an egg, then why are you waiting to put her in a lay bin!?

If she does have to lay, and she doesn't have the right space to do it, she could become egg bound. which leads to surgery, and from the looks of her MBD, she probably wouldn't survive it.

Hi Chase,

Yes she has had those bow legs for a while. That is why I had thought she had MBD. I am hesitant about the laying bin because it could just become a breeding ground for the coccidia until I know it is cleared up. Right now Zoey is in a 10 gallon tank just so she has more room to hunt and climb.

The vet did an x-ray on her about 4 weeks ago. He didn't see any eggs at all. That is why I am kinda confused?

There are no live plants in her cage at the moment. I got a little Ficus tree, but am waiting till I get my apt in a few weeks. She was on Albon for the parasite which she responded well to.

I read the previous threads from the OP and she is on medications.

But I do agree, there should be a bin available all the time. I think it is an egg, it doesn't look like the white stuff from the plants.

Their gestation is about 4 weeks, so even if she was not gravid then, it is very possible that she is now. I think you should put a bin in there

If that is an egg, then she needs a lay bin right now.

coccidia or not, she has to be able to lay, and if shes laying eggs without a bin, its past the time to add one.

can you cut that white thing and see what it does?

its still oddly shaped for an egg, and super small, wen my girl laid hers looked like jelly beans. this could be because of the MBD.

If you have to put her back on meds for the coccidia after this, I recommend ponazuril, the albon can be very harsh on their bodies, and she already isn't 100% to begin with.

Sorry camimom,

I should have been more clear. The parasite was causing inflamation in her intestions and the vet put her on Albon to treat both of the symptoms at the same time. Some other members were concerned that she would have a poor reaction to the medication and persistently requested that I move her to Ponazuril.

She would not have survived waiting for the few weeks it would have taken to get Ponazuril to the clinic. I know I made a few members upset about that choice, but I really do care for Zoey and so does her vet.

This is just strange because she is still eating a ton and drinking. And she hasnt looked gravid to me at all. She stays on her basking platform and is not showing the typical signs of a laying female.

I can put in the small bin and see what happens. After I talk to the vet today I will let you all know what he says.

Your cham has MBD. The eggs being infertile will usually be smaller, more so with her calcium deficiency because they are probably immature eggs that her body had to get rid of because they were taking more calcium from her. That and the meds can cause premature laying.

I know all about the inflammation, I had a cham that had it, and it caused prolapses on an hourly basis. the ponazuril is just easier on the body for them, that's all.

not all females will stop eating and drinking when gravid. and she probably didn't change colors because shes gravid with infertiles. some females don't change to the dark coloring when gravid if they weren't bred.

I agree with mike that the oddity of this thing could be because of the mbd. but she has to be able to lay them anyway.

I will get that laying bin in her tank asap. The vet isn't in today so I will have to wait till tomorrow morning to bring her in to see what the heck is up.

Thanks all.

Ok so I put a large bowl of sand in her recovery tank. She kinda walked around in it, but really doesn't show much interest. I just went to check on her and found another egg on the ground, but next to the bowl.

Any thoughts? Do some females just not use laying bins?

Ok. It went great at the vets office this morning. He is impressed at how much better Zoey is looking. She is now on liquid calcium drop for the next 2 months to help get her strength back up.

So glad that she is doing better and will recover.

Did the vet xray to see if there was a big clutch in her? Also just watch for her to become more active and not interested in food; that's the sign she's about to lay.

Just checking because I didnt see it mentioned; you are dusting her meals with calcium, d3, and vitamins, right?

I'm glad she is finally getting some liquid calcium for the MBD.
Glad you put a container in for her to dig in...is it deep enough? Is the sand moist enough to hold a tunnel?

I'm really hoping she can get through this egglaying and the MBD and the coccidia....but it will take a lot of care. The egglaying site has to be acceptable, she has to get enough calcium so that the muscles can push the eggs out, etc.

When/if she starts digging do not let her see you watching her or she may abandon the hole and it can lead to eggbinding if it happens too often.

Hope she makes it through all of this.

Since she is not interested in the laying bin, I just have a deep bowl in there for her just in case. She kinda walks on it if she is hunting, but seems to prefer her platform. That is were she laid the 2 eggs. Maybe she is just wierd.

I am gonna have another fecal done hopefully tomorrow or saturday, just to be sure the parasites are gone.

I have to admit. She is a fighter and a strong little thing. This is an experience for me as I have not had a female that has had eggs before. I am keeping a close eye on her to make sure that everything is ok.

I did want to let everyone know that her care is very important to me. If I was making more than $8 an hour at work I would give her so much more. The best. But I am trying my best to give my cham all the care that she needs. I am willing to put in the time to make sure that she recovers. I want to see her get strong and maybe one day be able to have babies. Once I am making enough to support a whorde of little ones :)

Thank you all for support and advise. It means a lot.
