You may have noticed that I've posted a few threads involving crickets and th stank. We'll the fiance ad I are total clean freas. I realy want to keep my little Reggie and his envoirnment as clean as possible. Wondering wat good household products I can use 100% safely around him? Cricket bin, cage, food tray, vines, etc. I'm hopeing to clean every 4 days and all the help is appreciated. I am going to pick up the reptisafe cleaner, but I feel I should learn the tricks ad technqiues aswell. Thanks in advanced and happy Chamming =P

I clean my cricket bins with a water/bleach solution mixed 10 parts water/1 part bleach. I rinse them out very well and I place them in front of a large fan to dry out. As far as cleaning my chameleon cages, I build my own cages so that I can take off the entire lower front panel portion and I use a high pressure hose from behind to spray out all of the waste. Honeslty, I don't really use any kind of solution on the chameleon cages, but alot of people either use white vinegar or steam cleaning.

Thanks for the quick reply, steam claning sounds a little overkill. I like the idea of white vinigear, do you have a rough idea of ratio to hot water?

Get a steam cleaner or use something all natural and safe like vinegar if your planinng on cleaning that often. You really should just keep the dung picked up. And do a big cleaning a few times a month. Unless the cham has parasites and your worried about reinfection during treatment. If the cham does have parasites your going to want to clean as much of the cage and furnishings as possible with hydrogen peroxide. Normally cleaning every 10 days is pretty standard fare though.

Even if you free range feed your crickets they should be eatten pretty quickly unless your overfeeding the animal. So the cage should stay clean just by spot cleaning as you notice poops.

I keep my cricket bin clean by cleaning 1x a week with soap and water. I clean the bin of frass/crick poo evry cpl of days and remove any veggies or fruit not eatten every day. Keep your bin dry it keeps the smell down and air circulation thru the bin is key to keeping it dry.

I use crushed walnut shells at the bottom of my cricket bin then sift dead bugs as needed. Also change egg cartons frequently (their poop is worst of smell). I keep a spray bottle of white vinegar in the cham room for any cleaning.

Are you really planning to clean his cage every 4 days?
This will be a lot of really unnecessary stress for your chameleon.

When you are bored in the off days of cleaning you could come and do mine too:)

I hate cleaning the crickets...they are nasty, Hate them, every piece of dealing with them!

but I do clean them every other day, I use vinegar and water. Never used the egg cartons- Don't have them cause the neighbor raises chickens. I use toilet paper and paper towel tubes.

My cage pick up the poo I can see and every 2 weeks wipe off the plant leaves.

Hmm Can I use vinegar on them as well or will it kill them and does it need to be rinsed off of the leaves?

Yes you can use vinegar on the leaves. I just give the plants a quick hose down after to rinse off the residue left behind. Vinegar is the best all nat cleaning product you can use. Sometimes you need something stronger but for ordinary stuff it rocks.

I use peroxide, acetone sometime as well , I prefer not to but I do. Usually on the white bottoms of screen cages. Or Just soap and water. I spray leaves with dish soap if Im actually going to clean the leaves then rinse. I hate the smell of vinegar is why I probably don't use that option much. I have and I can't stand it.

It's pretty much the same for me! I clean the crickets bucket and the enclosure twice a week..
Cleaning freaks welcome to my club!!:)

Glad to hear every 4 days wasto much! Lightens my day! And I think the crickets were doing it for me (eliminated that with a huge tote and planning to keep well cleaned!

Hey Buddy,
i think that if you just get his poo out of the cage and make sure the whole cage can dry out at least once a day, it should be okay to only clean the cage when you see that you need to.
We in germany use soil with Trichorhina tomentosa and springtails which keep the cages perfectly clean so if you get out the poo you can find, it´s unnecessary to ever clean the cage.
I know people who didn´t clean their cages for 7 years+ without any problems.
