You said he's likely around 9 months? He's probably just going through his teenage phase and wants to mate. It's happening with a lot of the younger males on the forum. Make sure to get a multivitamin for him and one without D3 since you already have a calcium with D3. All you gotta do is switch your dusting schedule to the one I posted about and he should be good.
It's a boy!! Time to break our the cigars. Lol. All kidding aside old buttercup has had a had a rough 2 days. Teen hormones!! I very much appreciate the advice and will follow up with all tonight. I sought out vets for days and got nowhere. I really appreciate the help of other enthusiasts!!
I think you should continue this thread and start another in the Chameleon Identification section of the forum page with the photos you have now asking whether male or female. You might get more numerous expert opinions that way. I'm not very familiar with senegal chams and don't want to venture a guess.
I would try making a safe free range that he can wander on for an hour or so. It may help with his antsyness. Seems to help far too much with the other boys honestly. A lot of the forum has resorted to them the last month or so because their boys are driving them up the wall.
It's recommended that you dust the insects just before feeding them to him at almost every feeding with a phosphorous-free calcium powder to help make up for the poor ratio if calcium to phosphorous found in most feeder insects.
It's recommended that you dust twice a month with a phosphorous-free calcium/D3 powder to ensure he gets some D3 without overdosing it and leaving it to produce the rest of the D3 from its exposure to the UVB light. D3from supplements can build up in the system but D3 produced from exposure to the UVB won't as long as the chameleon can move in and out if it at will.
It's recommended that you dust twice a month with a vitamin powder that contains a beta carotene prOformed vitamin of vitamin A. Proformed sources of vitamin A won't build up in the system like prEformed sources will so you won't overdose him. This leaves it up to you to decide if he needs the prEformed or not.
Did he start this behaviour before you moved the cage near the window or after?
There is a uvb bulb. I will adjust the supplementation schedule per the suggestions. Multi vitamin to be purchased shortly this evening. I believe the problem with over activity is due to too high a wattage basking bulb. With the basking light now off he has settled into an upper area of the enclosure. His placement was close to the window and now moved to the other side away from it everything has leveled off well. This will be the first spring he has been with us and as such the changing of the season may have raised his enclosure temperatures abnormally quickly. We plan to switch to a lower wattage basking bulb and see how the weekend goes along. If any other members have any other questions or feedback please do let us know. We very much appreciate the help and advice.
After an evening calm and green sitting on his roost our Senegal has decided this morning to crawl everywhere and is dark in color again. I'm hoping it's just a mating season activity. I can't think of anything else to do to help this guy. Switched the basking light to a lower wattage but he is very unhappy.
I can't actually think of why it wouldn't be... He isn't acting super sick... He may get better after regular outings on his roost/free range. Otherwise there is always a vet if you are super concerned.
Appreciate the response. I took him to the vet 2 days ago but honestly when he's out he is green and seems fine. Fecal test was negative. I honestly can't see how the vet can help as silly as that sounds and honestly the feedback from the members has proven more helpful than 2 visits to the vets we've had.
Then it sounds like he is just being hormonal. It is likely he may not settle through the spring months a lot. But doing the hour a day or so on a free range will help him get it out of his system slowly. It might increase his appetite too.
Search ... hormones or teenage on the forum, you will likely find a lot of threads XD there is a lot more hormones related to chameleons than people realize. He's going through a teenage stage. Just try to support him in anyway you can ^^
