Totally off topic! Car Repair Issue!

2 months ago I paid to have an engine replaced (teen daughter failed to put oil in old one!). It was a used engine with 50,000 miles on it-standard 1 year warranty and 90 day labor warranty. The engine light came on on the way home, we took it back and it was a coolant sensor of some sort that was replaced the next day. A few days ago she went out to the car and the coolant was in a puddle under the car. The shop says the water pump is an accessory and not covered under either warranty. The mechanic told me that he pulled the water pump off the old engine since the one on the replacement engine looked leaky. I think at best I should have had the option to put on a new water pump at the time or to pay for one now and not get charged for labor. I would appreciate any thoughts in this! Thanks! Juli
Any mechanics out there? Am I getting ripped off?

Getting ripped... Yea, if he knew that both did not look good when the thing was put in you should have been informed. A water pump is not to hard to fix, you should be able to knock it out in no time :)

I'm gonna have to say no, not getting ripped off. In my experience with engine swaps all the accessories like water pump, intake manifold, valve covers, distributor, etc have been replaced with what was on my original motor. In the case of a used engine I still don't think the water pump would be covered under the warranty and in this case the shop even tried to do what was best by choosing the best looking of the two. It would have been nice of them to give you the option of putting a new one on, but hey, hindsight is 20/20. It was probably just it's time to go; water pumps never go at good times. One way or another, they are usually pretty cheap and a quick fix on most cars.

Well-they killed the labor charge for the most part so I feel OK about the situation-thanks for the input!

I'm with Kent. Typically when buying a used motor, especially with 50K on the clock, you really only have the promise that the block/head & tranny (if included) are going to work. I've seen good water pumps go bad during head jobs. The seals don't like to dry out.
