Too Early to Take My Baby Out?

Just got my baby Panther yeserday, I decided to bring him outside with his little ficus to soak up some sun. Is it too early to do this? He seemed to be a little freaked out at first but is now just sort of "chilling" in the sun. I'm outside getting a tan with him, lol!:)

Oooh you two are so lucky - the only thing you`d catch here in sunny England is pnuemonia  I`m sure the sun will be great for him if he`s happy to be there. Gizzy always freaks in summer when we first go out, but within minutes she`s have a great time. :D

Hahah! Good thing is that here in San Diego we are still getting good sunny days. It started out a little cloudy and chilly but the sun decided to pop through. Here he is basking... He just need to learn how to get away from the sun when he gets too hot. I think i'm going to take him back in now.

Honestly I don't think there is a set time. My cham wouldn't have anything to do with me until he was about 6-7 months old. If he'll let you take him out, do so. Once they soke up the sun they will get use you taking them outside. My cham wants to go outside every chance he gets!.:D

New to this

I will be getting a veiled chameleon soon, and was wondering: can you just take them out on a plant, or do they need to be inside of a cage of some type to go outdoors. I just wouldn't want it to get scared and jump away. Still trying to learn as much as possible, and this forum is great:)

Unless you are going to keep an eye on him the entire time, chams should always be in a cage outside.

Between birds seeing them as food, and them just wandering away, its risky.

I agree with this completely! This past summer I had a baby female veiled wander away from me even though I was watching her on her outdoor free range. I lost her in a tree that I saw her run to but the little minx managed to replicate the color perfectly. Needless to say I was panicking HUGE when my hubby managed to locate her on the top of the tree.

I also had my Nosy Be escape from his indoor cage while my hubby was in the same room (he was supposed to be keeping his eye on them as the cages were opened a small amount to combat high humidity) We found Big Turq in the apple tree in our backyard more than 24 hours later. I was devastated thinking he was gone, and just about murdered my husband in the interim. You can imagine my delight at finding him well.

These little guys will take off at any given time, or be a target for prey animals. I have learned to keep them inside screen cages when they are outside!

outdoor time

Rule of thumb is temperature variation. you don't want to expose your cham to a large temp difference. say you keep them at 75-80f, you don't want to go out with them at 92f or something. try and get them use to 4-5f degree changes until your outdoor temps is something they are use to. they can overheat or go into shock if they have never experienced a particular temp. all mine have cages outside. i have forgotten a latch or two. just get in the habit of checking twice. going inside and once when come outside, every time. if you have ocd like me, that can be a plus too.

what a good looking cham

You are so lucky that your little one actually lets you handle him. My little guy will not let me touch him. When I get near him he runs away as fast as he can and gets his black stripes on him. I am slowly working on getting him to trust me, but it is going to be a long process with this one. I am hoping once he gets bigger that he learns to trust me more. I have had him for 7 weeks now and he has only been held 1 time since he has been with me and that was stressful for both of us.
