To Be or not to be?

What is the best action if a veiled chameleon becomes aggitated and tries to bite? I have read that some people say stand your ground and dont move, Show the cham who is boss and that you aren't scared of him. I have also read that other people say just let them be, do not further them and do not let them bite you because the bites could be severe enough for stitches. thoughts and suggestions???

You'll have to work with him. If he doesn't want anything to do with you, you can try hand feeding and just hanging outside of his cage with his door open to show that you mean no harm.

How old is he. Usually the just bluff until you get you out. After 2 weeks my Cham doesn't care what I do to him that much anymore. He used to gape and put nose right on my hand and look like he was gonna bite. But he was just totally bluffing and would hiss and hiss and hiss but never bite. If you have the patients and can get past the "pissed" display then eventually he'll be fine. If you show them who's boss they will do your bidding.

Funny this thread popped up...my veiled who I've had since beginning of summer bit me today for the first time. I think he was more upset I was trying to get him out to show a friend who had never met him before. He did break the skin slightly but not bad...peroxide the hell out of it!!!! We're cool now tho after my friend left, guess he doesn't like him, he's always been cool with other people tho

My Little guy never officially bite me but he had his mouth open and kinda lunged at me. Since the incident i've let him be but i think today i will try to see if he will let me take him out for a bit. Hoping this goes over well!

My elder veiled wasn't used to being handled when I got him but with daily handling and some patience, he knows who's boss now and in fact will walk on to my hand for his daily 'cuddle'...lol I have been working on my little girl Isis, who I've had since 11 weeks; she is now 10 months. When I first brought her home she would hiss and lunge at me, even bit me a few times but I kept at it and she's doing really great - she won't walk onto my hand yet but she will hold still so I can gently take her off the vine. She also stopped the lunging and hissing at me when she realised I was the link between life and death...she was diagnosed with pnuemonia mid August. With 24hr heat, Baytril and some extra love and attention - thankfully she is doing well and seems to be recovering! (knock wood!)

Patience is key, don't force and a little sweet talking doesn't hurt! lol

I bought green garden gloves lol I used to be afraid of stressing my girl out and her biting me lol but really you just gotta come at them slow with the gloves on lol and pick them up. Once on your hand they're pretty chill. Show him some sun light for a few minutes then put him back inside. Or let him chill on a tree outside for a couple hours while you clean the cage or something then gently scoop him back up to go inside. You can use your other hand as a distraction if a lunge and bite is on its way lol. Just be gentle slow and steady:)

Mine is only territorial inside his cage. So i put both my hands in a shirt to hide my hands and get him out that way. Once he is out and on my hand he will calm down and just chill or walk around. I had a male before that i would do the same with but once i would remove the shirt and uncover my hands he would literally bite down on the hand that he was sitting on ha. little bastard.

He was really mad you took the shirt off your hand and was teaching you a lesson!!

I am a little worried about being bit. gloves sound like a good plan but if he learns to be held and picked up with the gloves when he gets comfortable with me will he be use to the gloves and not my hands?

He probably won't know by then. He'll probably not care that you don't, you'll be boss then. If you get past the initial fear you'll be fine. And if you pick him up or he has nowhere to go he'll run. Just a warning.

I used a golf glove. No shame in my game...

Smeagol is almost completly tame, I even pet him and he will close his eyes, but he does have moods and can get cranky. We seem to have a mutual respect for each other's moods!!
Most of the time, I can wait a bit and he will be in a better mood, but I do have a pair of strong work glove handy just in case.

They are animals after all. No matter how tame you get any animal, never take chances!!
Look what happened to Steve Erwin!! :(
