Thinking of Breeding

I have a male and female veiled that I am thinking about breeding in the future and just had a question or two. How long is the entire process (from start to finish). After they mate how long do they retain the eggs before laying them? Also is there any sort of minimum age that they should not be mated until? My male is still pretty young but seems huge for his age, and the female is a couple months older than he is (to my knowledge). I think she is about 7-9 months and the male is roughly 6-7months (I got him from Chameleon Nation in jan at about 3 months i believe). So yeah just starting to look into it now and I wasn't thinking about doing it until the summer, unless even that is too early for them.

Wait till shes after a year in age, it puts a trememdous amount of strain on the animals. There are a few excellent threads on this matter, along with Brad Ramsey's blog. Try the search feature!:)

All I do is work and I only own 2 chams so far so I got a little bit saved up ;D. I always struggle with the search feature so I figured it'd be easier just to post exactly what I want to know. I am also unsure as to exactly how old the female is. I am just going by how old I thought she was when I got her. She came from PetSmart who offered no information other than the fact that "it" was a chameleon. Thanks for the input though. Looks like it will be august-september before I try.

Zeke20 said..."How long is the entire process (from start to finish)"...do you mean from mating to egglaying or from mating to hatching or ??

You said..."After they mate how long do they retain the eggs before laying them?"...mating to laying the eggs would be 30 days...but it can vary depending on when during the female's cycle they are mated. If they are fairly far along she might "dump" the infertile eggs sooner than that and then go on to lay a fertile clutch....or she could lay a clutch that contains some fertile and some infertile eggs.

You asked..."Also is there any sort of minimum age that they should not be mated until?"...I never mate them until they are at least a year old and full grown.
