The worst treatment

So I thought I would vent my anger at an unnamed Pet Company throught these forums and see if I am not just being over dramatic.. When I walked into the shop I noticed 5 veileds in one enclosure... Most were very young maybe 1 to 2 months but there was one poor male I believe (not too good sexing wee bit new to these guys) that had to be at least 4 months... There were only two real pieces of fake plant, a water dish, no mister, about 8 crickets, and the entire cage had one piece of mesh on the top of the enclosure which was only ONE FOOT TALL!!! I wanted to throw a fit but I decided to calmly vent to an employee who then explained to me that that is how they SHOULD be housed! Im sorry but I almost hit her.... Am I too angry?

unfortunatle your not alone  all we can do is try to educate these co-operations! well done you for trying anyway :) (i did my little bit a few weeks ago, with a happy outcome) :D

Are you too angry? When it comes to any kind of abuse on any living creature, you can never be too angry in my book. I have ripped the manager of the pet co near me so many times, they no longer carry chameleons. Next I will tackle how they house geckos.:)

You are not over reacting at all. But I have been hearing lately about people getting PetCo's to stop carrying reptiles all together. Its happening in my neck of the woods. But one PetSmart employee told me that she knows its the wrong housing and care. But corprate has control over them and the employees dont have any say or control. Thats why I dont understand why the little mom and pop pet stores do it wrong too. (well I know because they are stupid) but if I had full control I would strive to be better than Petsmart and Petco. Its sick.

I like your style Laurie :) Im trying to work currently with my local Petland because they are getting reptiles for the first time and they WILL be carrying veilds, some panthers, crested geckos and possibly iguanas... I just hope they do it right, the people at mine SEEM better learned but I could be wrong

I think it's all about percentages! as we all know %'s -: i.e (profit) = £/$, chameleons are a specilist reptile to care for. I don't really think that these large pet stores truely understand how these reptile live in the wild! they just see the large markup (BLING FACTOR) and demand for them (and only see them as a standard reptile, i.e "a lizard") which is a shame  You just have to see the wide varity of animals they sell with great success, there bound to come across something thats gunna trip them up once in a while (just how long it takes them to realise that is anyone's guess) so a message to all is keep up the good work, and let them know when there getting it wrong. One day they will learn!

Just my opinion.

The corporation store by my house hates seeing me lol Lets just say Im very loud with my opinion and have no problem involving other customers.

LOL, i get that feeling evertime i go to the pet shop where i live (in relation to the jackson i helped) i don't care what people say about me, bla bla bla. As long as i get my opinion/advice across thats all that matters :D

Yes, but make sure your opinion is backed up by an impartial, recognized information source (such as this forum or a good breeder site) so the shop can't just pass you off as a crackpot. After all, they may not know you or have any reason to trust what you say. We all know how much bad/stupid husbandry legends are floating around out there.

The way I approach it is to give the shop a chance to learn ONE TIME. I am polite, don't pitch a fit the first time I see the problem, try to get them into a rational conversation, chat about my own chams and how I treat them, offer suggestions they can make easily (lure them in with pleasant bait and THEN pounce on the big stuff!) offer to help fix the problem along with them, etc. If they blow me off or don't change anything then they "earn" my louder complaints, the public event, embarrassment in front of other customers, threats to report their neglect, etc.
