the vet has a question

Hi all I need help. I posted a question about a problem with a panther falling of his perch and everyone said to see a vet even if I live in very rural Montana. Well I have talked the local vet into running a fecal float for me. Now he want to know where he could go to see what the parasite might look like and what others have had prescribed for the problem. My question should I treat all 5 of my panthers (also have 5 veiled) or just the one I really feel has a problem? I don't dare walk into this vet with 12 fecal samples the first time I meet him after I almost had to beg to get him to do this. Need any help you guys can offer, thanks Laurie

Howdy Laurie,

In addition to the posts mentioned, "Understanding Reptile Parasites" 2nd Edition, by Roger J Klingenberg, DVM is full of just the kind of info that your Vet could use to ID and treat for many of the parasite types that might be found. If you buy it, you could share it (and give the Vet a copy for Christmas :o) while any parasites are being ID'd. It is usually under about $15.

What the Vet will be looking for is mostly: Coccidia Pinworm Roundworm Hookworm Flagellates Strongyloides Giardia. If you search with Google on those parasite names, you'll find lots of photos and info. Use the Google "Images" tab in the upper lefthand corner of the Google main page. Example: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Coccidia&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi A fecal smear will show-up some parasites while a fecal float will help locate others. I've got some of my parasite photos in Photobucket at: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v661/dave_weldon/Parasites/ (No guarantees that I've ID'd everything correctly :o.)

just put in the call

Thanks for the idea of getting a reptile vet to talk to the vet up here. I just left a message for Dr. Tom Greek who was my vet in Sou Cal, until I moved here a year ago. Guess I have just been lucky so far.

Dave, any idea on what meds to use? I have panacur but that is all. The vet doesn't sound like he will know.

I knew I forgot something :o:

Coccidia: Ponazuril (Diamondback Drugs will compound it cheap)
Pinworm: Panacur
Roundworm: Panacur
Hookworm: Panacur
Flagellates: Flagyl
Strongyloides: Panacur
Giardia: Panacur
