The 4x4x2 build

Hi all
Picked up my 4x4x2 today,and tommorow is the first day of the build
Here are some pics of it, no modification yet, it is for a pair of Veiled, but i will have a 3x2x2 ready incase of an argument, if this happens i will split it into 2 4x2x2's for them.

Thats all for now, the middle peice have 2ft cut out to leave two 1ft shelves for plants and branches,
For ventilation the top and bottom will have mesh strips placed across the and the wooden back jigsawed out.
Thats all for now as i say, tommorw there will be some updates, and maybe a new pic or two of Bud.

You are putting a male and female together in one cage? Very bad idea. Chams need to be separately housed, especially a male and female. You will cause nothing but stress for them both.

Also I know people love glass... But I would recommend putting in a screen front to the cage for ventilation and so the chams don't see their own reflection. Chams live alone out in the wild and when they see another cham it will cause them stress. Seeing its own reflection a cham will feel as though another cham is present.

Edit: Also lighting should not be inside of the cage with the chams as they can get too close and burn themselves. I would cut a hole in the top for the heat lamp. You could install a UVB tube lamp inside the cage... just be sure not to get it wet ;).
 
If you use that you are going to need to find a way to waterproof all of that wood as it will be getting soaked every day. Lights need to be located outside the cage.

hehe I was typing my edit about the lights as you were posting, I heard my email update and thought 'i bet someone is responding about those lights.....':rolleyes:
 
I have just been on a european forum and all of their chameleon enclosures look like this.

I will be interested to see your final product.

Good ol' PVA glue and water mixture for waterproofing.
i have a 3x2x2 spare incase they fight, i have always kept viv lights inside, and never had a burnt cham or blown up a bulb, but i will see what i can do about external mounting.
 
your two chameleons will probably not fight. They will most likely just stress each other, and have one subtly dominate the other for resources until the other dies. The male will also breed the female too often drastically shortening her life.
 
I dont have to worry about this now as i have found a sheet of wood i can cut down to seperate immediatly if they fight, or get stressed, or breed more than once every year.

Don't wait for them to fight.... just keep them separate unless they are young at the moment... but after 4 months or so of age they are to be separate.
 
Not sure why anyone is still trying to explain to him. He's made it clear that he's going to house them together regardless of what anyone says.
Let him house them together in a cage crafted like they do in Euro.
Unless you like beating your head against the wall let him do as he will..
I know the chameleons are going to suffer but that's his choice and nothing you or anyone says is going to convince him otherwise..
 
that euro forum is crazy. it seems as though they all have different information than we stick to strictly over here. weird..

They probably think the same thing..."Screen cages?!? Surely they won't hold in enough heat and humidity! How do you keep the water from going everywhere? Live plants? Don't the chameleons suffer from being near the soil?"
