Temperament differences?

My first cham was a female veiled (from petco).
I got her almost a month ago, and she's always been on edge. If you come near her cage, she hiss's, hides, and turns dark. The second you walk away, shes fine.

A few days ago I purchased a male veiled about a month younger than her, from a reptile shop that breeds them. and he was still with other juveniles. Hes the happiest, most active and unshy cham ive ever seen.

I understand that the fact that she came from horrible home for god knows how long may be the problem.. But my question stands;

Is a cham's character different between genders? or maybe age? home?
Im curious:p

Yes, yes, and yes.

Each individual chameleon, as well as husbandry, gender, age will differ in personality. When you hear that Veileds are more aggressive, that is because on average you tend to see more aggressive Veileds then other species.

ya I agree. Each one is an individual. Some are more aggressive or more tolerant than others. Some of this is husbandry, the way that you approach etc, and some is just how the animal is. Some change over time, becoming more aggressive or more relaxed. I've kept siblings from the same clutch all raised/kept/fed etc the same way, and found quite noticable differences in "personality". But if you treat the animal with gentleness and respect its needs, I do think you can influence even the most naturally aggressive animal.
